Banana Allergy and Cholinergic Urticaria

July 24, 2016 by Forum Member

I bought the book the other day, after I realized one of, if not my main trigger.

Some may remember my first post ‘Uk experience with CU’, in that I described the origin of my hives and my allergic reaction, I attributed it to a culmination of high histamine foods and hay fever. However, I was making a smoothie last week consisting of apples, bananas, milk and ice cream. I drank 1/2 and gave half to my gf.

Pretty much instantly I got a scratchy throat, puffy eyes, went to be sick and came back down with a swollen lip and then went to bed with cramps. I thought back to my first reaction and realized I was walking and eating a Banana when it happened.

I’ve done some research and I think it’s a pollen allergy, I get similar symptoms during high pollen.

Does anyone have any experience with this. I personally think it’s just one of many triggers or allergens. Only because I still have my CU even though I don’t eat those foods, i.e. apples, bananas etc.

I’m working on cutting milk out, as I was intolerant as a baby, and drank soya & goats milk. I still have it in my brews and its in loads of things too.

Any thoughts?

I just noticed that this has been the worse summer for me and that i have been eating a banana daily for the past few weeks. Ill keep the banana thing in mind. Thanks you may have just helped me a lot. Also I have a pool and once I go in it. My skin is much better hours after than it was before. Maybe its the chlorine? have you noticed anything like that?

I’ll be honest Ryan, Bananas may be a trigger and may harbour high histamine when ripe. However I think you would know if you are allergic, my response was rapid, i could feel the itchy throat instantly. Then the horrible symptons came on. I’d stop eating them in your case, just to see if there is a difference. Also going into the pool irritates my hives, unless I’ve been sweating beforehand, then its not as baD, but still worse than normal. It could be that you sweat in the water and rid yourself of histamine that way. There are various methods of cleaning a pool, not all are cholrine based, cholrine is an irritant. Something like Ozone or bromine may not be, you definetly got a cholrine pool?

Either way if it works for you keep it up, exercise and sweating can keep this condition manageable. In addition to eating the correct foods.
