Can Citrus Fruit or Oranges Help Treat (or Cause) Cholinergic Urticaria??
Post by: gazrang on November 12, 2008, 08:26:31 AM
Hi guys.
I’m pleased to write this..though it’s just a second post of my own on this forum. π I want to share my 1-week experience with you.
I found something very effective treatment on Cholinergic Urticaria, and before say that I would write some my background first.
As I said previous post, I live in Seoul, South Korea. Well medication at low cost due to well medical insurance system we got here.
So I tried everything I could do on the information I’ve read. It contains…
Anti-histamine therapy.
H.pylori eradication.
gluten-free diet(very short period)
milk-free diet(long period)
Vitamin Supplement.
gamma-linolenic acid supplement
some Korean oriental clinic treatment
etc…
All those therapies were totally “not effective” at all to me. I was very depressed those days because I’ve had Cholinergic Urticaria for 7 years and symptoms doesn’t seem to disappear soon.. Yes, the fact that there’s no effective treatment known so far is more tragic. π
Happily, that does not bother me anymore.
I found an interesting article written in Korean. Author is a doctor of Korean Oriental Medical and has his own hospital in Seoul. He specialized in allegy and urticaria. Sorry for it’s not in English, but It is the only site which contains ‘the effective therapy’ on the web. In one word, it says “Trifoliate orange” is very effective to ‘chronic’ urticaria. (Yes, he said ‘chronic’ not ‘cholinergic’. but he recommends this all urticaria patients.)
He said “Dried(important!) Trifoliate Orange(DTO)” is the answer.
DTO is known for its virtue on urticaria among people(in tradtion) and Korean Oriental Medication in many years. I believe it is a well-accumulated exprience of many people for long time. Only dried Trifoliate Orange is used for oriental medication. It is a ‘herbal medicine’. There’s also scientific medical article for this fruit.(I I have an abstract, is there any way to attach a file to this post? Let me know.)
You cannot buy this at western medical clinic. Because this is only known treatment of eastern(oriental) medication.
You may be able to buy this from the dealer of oriental(chinese or korean) medication. Find out at China town. The medicine appears almost dark brown water, that is, a brewed DTO. You should boil the water with DTO for many hours then you drink the water.
After two days of this treatment, I was able to be almost free of itch, pruritus, stinging skin at normal activities-walking on sunny day, getting on subway in Winter, etc.. And it’s going better day by day(it’s been one week from first treatment) I feel at home on my hot shower and my warm bed. Out-door activies also. I would consider this symptom level 5-10 compared to 100(my a week before condition). I fee just a slight itching at extreme high body temperature but it’s not that strong and widespread what it used to be. It almost free of symptom on daily basis. Getting on a subway with coat used to be a HELL to me, but today I feel nothing but I’m sweating…no itchy no pruritus.
I say again, I feel almost cured in just one week and I see a bright side of my life again. I hope you all may meet this unique fruit and have peace in mind. I didn’t belive at first this tiny fruit would cure my Cholinergic Urticaria. But now… I think of it as God’s present to the Cholinergic Urticaria patient.
(I didn’t mention above but another korean blogger(except me) wrote on his blog that he’s also feel the effects of this herbal medicine on Cholinergic Urticaria).
the doctor’s other article says there’s also more helpful herbal medicines, so next time i’ll try it again. (I’ve never met the doctor in personal and been to his hospital. I only read his helpful articles and columns.)
There’s a Hope..Brothers.
P.S. Sorry for my poor English. π

Seems there’s nowhere in the UK selling Citrus trifoliata but I’ll try having more citrus in general, on the off-chance that works too.

Thanks for sharing your experience gazrang. It sounds interesting, but I have had a lot of citrus in the past with no noticeable results.
But if this seems to be helping you then that is great. Just watch out for the up and down cycles of Cholinergic Urticaria. I have had many times in the past where I thought a diet, or antihistamine, etc. was working and actually curing my cholinergic urticaria…only to find out that it was just a cycle of ups and downs, and I still had it.
So make sure to keep us posted with your results if this continues to help for the long term, and to let us know if it still helps after a few weeks, or if it was just a coincidence.
Thanks again for sharing

It worked very well as I posted. I got better and better last 6 months and I’m free of Cholinergic Urticaria. It is warm here Seoul, Korea. But it never bothers me anymore.
I’m not assure that complete cure of Cholinergic Urticaria on me. And also I’m not confident that it’s just on and off period not cure. Sooo, I decided to watch my body condition(including Cholinergic Urticaria) for long period. If I would be free of Cholinergic Urticaria for 1 year, I will post some more post for my therapy.
Only I can say now is that it works, and I feel very happy everyday.(I don’t like to remember the days past 7yrs.)
Thanks.

any chance of providing a source for this info?
I’ve eaten oranges on a regular basis for a long time now and I haven’t noticed it aiding my hives. I don’t have it right now but then again I rarely have it during the summer periods.
My hives also stopped soon after I decided not to eat bananas for a period of time, but once again this all could be put down to the summer thing. I’d also been using some prescription-only antihistimines at the time also so it could be that as well, I just don’t know :D.

Thanks for the info rkn85!
I hope your hives stay gone. The only thing is, I would be cautious becomes cholinergic urticaria has a tendancy to go easy for a while. It then seems as if maybe it is gone, only to come right back within a week or month.
I have eaten a lot of oranges in the past (I love those navel oranges), and it didnt’ really seem to help my Cholinergic Urticaria. But hey, if it is working for you that is awesome. I hope they stay gone, and let us know if they come back. Thanks again.

Dear Raj/rkn85,
Thanks for the post, it is giving me some hope, but in my case the itch is there 24/7 and it is hell to say the least. Rashes do come with an attack but they are not that visible. Is your itch gone completely? I can’t go out in the sun as the itch gets horrible. Please reply, thanks
James

Title: Fruits Causing Hives?

Does anyone feel hives whenever you eat cold fruits? I do. I don’t get full breakouts but I’ve noticed that when I eat cold fruits like oranges and papayas I can feel some hives popping up on me sometimes. Is there something about the fruits that’s stimulating these hives? I’am not allergic to fruits. I’ve noticed this since my Cholinergic Urticaria has become more of a problem.

I get hives (mostly just a few prickles) from some fruits as I eat them, mostly: Oranages, apples, pineapple, or anything with a vinegar or strong acidic taste.
The reason is because the citrus or vinegary nature, and it is the same as eating spicy foods. If I use too much ketchup, the same thing can happen.
But to me, that is the only reason why I get the hives–just because it is kinda spicy and the citrus makes you flush just like eating a hot pepper does. I don’t think I am allergic or anything.

Very helpful… I will definitely try out this treatment and lets see if it works… I hope i can find it easily and if not… I will try to get it… it is really worth it if it works… Living with Cholinergic urticaria is very unpleasant and uncomfortable and even more when the warm seasons are coming up.
I have tried Anti-histamine but those are not effective just for the moment it can help you. It is very sad to suffer this illness and this is not known by many people so people may look at you as a strange and weirdo… but what else can be do? deal with this and try to hide in the cold places when we are attacked with this.
I hope every person participate in the forum actively so everyone that is in the same situation as us or someone who we know can benefits from the information posted. I will be very happy really really happy if it cures. I live in Bay area California and here is dry the weather i dont know if it is something that happens in the dry weather because my hometown is a place hotter than here in California BUT there is humid and it has neverr never happened in my life before in my country, just when i come here and go back the first time when i get into the hot it happened but later on in a week my body get used to the humidity and it doesnt happen anymore..
SO is it related to the dry weather too?
Roger!

Hi everyone! New here but wanted to ask if anyone has looked into a condition called histadelia? Very real unrecognized condition. It has to do with methyl conversions or lack there of in the liver. There are a few supplements recommended or this condition, some of which work well but they are experimental based on the individuals genetic make up, Know from experience. I too suffer the hives from sweat/heat but am also considered dangerously autoimmune due to a genetic glitch. Due to my high histamine levels, I developed a severe allergy to not only my own sweat but also my own hormones and was suffering anaphylaxis with organ failure every month.
I’ve gotten a handle on the hormone allergy and my treatment seems to have helped with the other allergies as well. If I avoid known allergens to the best of my ability, then my body can handle the histamine load better. It’s not constantly compounding more and more with each individual exposure. Food/drinks and things that I applied to my skin (especially those with parabens) played a major role in my reactions.
I will not post my links to my story without Ben’s permission, he was kind enough to find me and lead me to his forum. Don’t want to be called a spammer or anything of the sort, just want to help others. Actually, if he wants to post my links himself, I would be very appreciative, the more info the better for others like us! I have a very long detailed medical history and several bouts of near death experiences from organ failure and shock, most of which are not written about in detail but I have survived, continue to survive, have never had proper medical treatment, and have been in remission for almost 8 months using only natural treatments. P
lease do research into histadelia/histadelics, the doctors do not know it all, and actually hindered my progress with prescription drugs rather than helped me. Hope this helps those desperate for answers!

no stay away from anything sour or spicy, you must try to eat food that are not to much of both, because hives is a over production of histamine due over exposure to adrenaline the only way to recover faster is to avoid such foods.. supplement with vitamin C 1000mg 2 to 3x a day Its the vitamin c which is helping from the orange due to that vitamin C helps you expel excess histamine in the body..

Do you eat the peel? I’ve read studies where some citrus fruits were helpful with allergies.
Like Hives Guy, I haven’t noticed anything when I eat them normally. I’ve been experimenting with the peel though, can’t tell if that works. Anyways, I’m glad it works for you!
