Could Tattoos or Body Piercings Affect Cholinergic Urticaria Attacks?
Post by: jga on April 02, 2009, 07:15:05 PM
I was wondering, is it possible for people with heat hives to get tattoos or would the tattoos get messed up from an outbreak?

Hmmm, good question!
I think if you had dermatographism it would be more of a challenge (since their skin swells up on contact). I personally don’t think it would cause a reaction during the actual process (if it is a cool setting and your body doesn’t over-heat while getting pricked with the needles).
As far as having the actual reaction with a tatoo, I don’t see how it could really distort it or anything. Anytime I have small bumps appear, they always go away & leave no trace at all. But I guess there is always a very tiny possibility there could be an issue.
So I don’t “think” there would be any issues, but then again, I have no tatoos so I don’t know. Any other Cholinergic Urticaria people have some ink??? lol
Just don’t get anything you will regret, those things are forever… lol

Has anyone else heard of that linkage? I was just wondering. I’ve had my septum, nose, and eyebrow pierced. I don’t recall having Cholinergic Urticaria before any of my piercings, but then again, it could all just be coincidence.

I don’t know of a direct link between Cholinergic Urticaria and piercings… but… a lot of people who have Cholinergic Urticaria had something happen to them before, an infection, stress, or a change of climate. Perhaps your piercings let some infection or bacteria in?

It’s possible. I was just curious. I heard quite a few people mention something about Cholinergic Urticaria (or AquaU) onsetting after they’d had a piercing. Just figured it was worth asking about.

I never even thought of this… I had my ears pierced around the time it really started happening. Both ears got infected but I tried to leave them in and clean up the infection without losing the piercings. After about a week of pain I pulled them out and let them heal up. I also got extremely sick that week from near alcohol poisoning on my 18th birthday (I don’t really drink and went overboard.)
The only reason I’m not so sure about this is because I’m pretty positive that I had some breakouts before this whole ordeal but it was much much tougher to reach that point and I could still sweat.

I got my cartilage pierced a little over a month ago and it never really got infected. My Cholinergic Urticaria has been pretty non-existant this entire summer and I’ve been working, exercising and sweating very normally so I’m not going to blame the piercings.

Hi,
I’m new to the forum and was wondering if anyone knows if it’s cool to get tattooed over Cholinergic Urticaria. I’ve had Cholinergic Urticaria for around 14 years and it seems to be getting worse and worse, to the point that I can feel the moment the process starts inside; even if I feel slightly uncomfortable eg calling someone by the wrong name, but I haven’t blushed or anything i can feel the process begin.
I had a bug the other week and after vomiting (sorry) the hives took on gargantuan proportions, it really has got ridiculous and is almost ever present these days. So, obviously I am worried that when the tattooist begins I’m going to feel the trigger and it’s going to come on heavy. The concern I have and the question for everyone is……will this mess up the lines on my tattoo? Help!!

Hello Dansla,
Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the great question!
I don’t have any tattoos and I am not really planning on getting one, so it is hard to speak from personal experience. However I can say that you will probably face the risk of an attack if at any point your body becomes heated. So if you get stressed, nervous, or anything else, you will probably have to ask the tattoo artist to stop while you calm down. It probably wouldn’t affect the lines if he/she was able to stop in time before you started moving/scratching. But then again, they may get annoyed if you do this a lot.
If they had the room very cool, it is possible that you may be able to get through it without an attack, but the risk seems pretty good that an attack may come on in my opinion. I would imagine that the stabbing pain from the needle would evoke an emotional response, which in turn would trigger the hives (which in turn would make you feel a different kind of stabbing/itchy pain on the inside ;).
All I know is that I hate being in public situations like that and having to deal with a hives attack. That is why I go to pretty good lengths to avoid public contact when I am having frequent or severe attacks. I even cut my own hair, get my wife to do the grocery shopping, and more.
In any event, if you do decide to go through with it, I wish you all the best of luck. I hope you don’t have hives and you like it, and you may want to take an ice pack to cool down or something.
Just remember, temporary tattoos are great too. They make awesome designs these days, they are way cheaper than getting a real one, and you would avoid the risk of hives/unclean needles, etc. Plus, when you get bored or want a new one, just wash it off! You never know if you may regret it 10 or 20 years down the line, like my wife’s grandfather who has a lady on his forearm…hehe.
Just my 2 cents =).

Thanks HivesGuy,
I appreciate your 2 cents! I’m definitely sold on the tattoo it’s not something I’ve rushed into but just recently thought, hold on will I actually be able to do it. I have the same concerns as you so I’m going to sit down and discuss with my tattoo artist. I’m also going to see my doctor soon with a list of tips that I’ve picked up from the forum!! Keep up the good work,
Dansla

I have had at least 3 tattoo’s done since dealing with these Hives. I had no problem with break outs at all. However we are all different and have different metabolisms so what works for one person may not for someone else….

Yeah thanks,
Got my first one done 2 weeks ago and there were no problems, although it was on my ribs and I don’t usually get affected so much there, tattoo artist didn’t seem too fazed by it though. Booked in for a half sleeve in 2 weeks so fingers crossed on that one as it’s gonna be at least a 3 hour session!

Hi all,
Started work on my half sleeve tattoo on Saturday and my Cholinergic Urticaria was on display a little bit before we started but once the needle was doing it’s job my Cholinergic Urticaria raised the white flag and went into retreat! A possible cure for Cholinergic Urticaria? Shock treatment!!

Have you noticed any changes in your symptoms since your first tattoo?

No I haven’t. My symptoms seem to be getting worse but that’s no link to the work I’ve had done. I sat for 7 hours getting tattooed 2 weeks ago and my Cholinergic Urticaria didn’t rear it’s ugly head once, which, on a normal day is unheard of. I seem to be able to bring my Cholinergic Urticaria on myself at times but there is much more to think about when getting tattooed I guess. Do you have some work planned?

Hello. I been thinking about getting a tattoo that covers my whole back. Just wondering if anybody got a tattoo with urticaria. If so did you any adverse reaction to the needle? Maybe this is a stupid question. Lol

shouldn’t be a problem bud
only this is if you get heated up when getting it done, you may need to take a break to let yourself cool down
