Could Tea Cause or Help Cholinergic Urticaria?
Post by: nithya on April 16, 2010, 08:19:45 PM
Hi ,
I have suffering from heat Urticaria since 06 . It all started on a cold winter afternoon as i was making hot tea…tried to sit down on my couch and the entire tea fell over me. Had 2nd and 3rd degree burns from that, after which i started getting these attacks.
I never am able to sit in a hot tub, sauna..or worst even get into my car that is parked in the sun for too long….It was frustrating initially but these days i have come to live with it….its sometimes sad when my son asks me to play in the tub with him….

Hi guys,
I have strongly come to suspect that green-tea is to blame for my cholinergic urticaria.
I’ve began to notice that I get severe flare-ups around the periods when I am drinking green-tea based beverages.
I also realized that I first developed the condition during the exact same period when I started regularly drinking green-tea based soft-drinks like Sobe and Nestea green.
I changed my diet drastically the last few months, and had virtually no attacks during that period. I had the occasional bumps when I took a hot shower, but nothing like the full-blown hives attack that covers my arms, face, neck and upper-torso with welts.
About a month ago I stopped eating healthy (exam crunch). I’ve been eating mainly fast-food for the last month, but even then my hives did not return.
2 days ago I was at a convenience store and bought a green-tea beverage.
Today I had a full-blown hives attack.
This makes no sense because researching green-tea, it is touted as a reducing agent for allergies. It even helps reduce the action of histamine which is a plus.
But I have little doubt in my mind about it. My hives were so constant throughought the last few years, and it was during that period when I drank green-tea all of the time.
Then my hives stopped and I credited it to my changed diet, but turns out the general diet had little to do with it. Seems like green-tea is my culprit.
Here are the ingredients on the latest bottle of green-tea that I suspect caused my attack.
Water
Organic sugar
Organic Green tea
Organic honey
Lemon juice
Am I crazy? Any other green-tea drinkers out there? Cut out the green-tea for a few weeks and see if there’s any improvement. I really hope I found my answer

Hmm,
It is often so hard to pinpoint what could be causing an increase of symptoms. But what I’d suggest is to look at everything from the prior month, and avoid it for a while.
For example, the fast food you ate could have initiated a slow allergic response in your body (or elevated your fats or other levels), which slowly translated into increased symptoms.
The tea could have a chemical, something in it that caused a gradual increase in symptoms (even if its organic, the tea leaf itself may have something your body doesn’t like.)
Perhaps you could either go back to eating healthy, or cut out tea (or both), and see if the next month your hives go back down in intensity. I’ve done this many times, and have been able to pinpoint definitive causes of increase in symptoms.

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out it’s the thermogenic effect of the hot drink your drinking that is causing you to break out, it’s not because you are allergic to green tea.
If you are drinking your green tea cold then it’s a different story, which I imagine your not.

I think, Red Ginseng Tea really worked for me to lessen the itchiness and hives.

Hey aeolus,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
I’ve never been a fan of tea personally, but if it works for you then that’s great. Let us know if it continues to work, or if anything changes with your hives.

I’m glad things are improving a bit.
My scalp just eventually stopped itching at all once my Cholinergic Urticaria calmed down. I didn’t really do anything special.
Of course, you could always try a moisturizing shampoo, or perhaps try an antihistamine to help with it on days when you can’t bear it. And obviously, make sure you don’t have any lice or something (although it’s doubtful, as I didn’t have lice or dandruff, and it was only the Cholinergic Urticaria making its way up there).
I hope it stops. I know how annoying it can be.
