Is Cholinergic Urticaria a Blood Disorder?
Post by: hivesblow on May 11, 2009, 11:19:05 AM
I just received the blood work results from my doctors appointment a couple weeks ago. as expected, my blood counts were perfect. my sun experiment has been held back because we have had no sun the last 7-10 days. lots of rain and cool weather.
I notcied from not having the sun for that week definetely made the hives worse again after spending those days in the sun (where i had improvement). this week im going to get some sun and start to see if it makes a difference. on a positive note, my pool is opening this week so that will definetely provide relief on the hot days!

Thanks for the update hivesblow. I am sorry that something curable didn’t turn up, and at the same time I am glad nothing deadly turned up in your bloodwork!
I hope you get some sun soon, and have fun at the pool.

HI! Was wondering if anyone here at autoimmune tests done? My Single Stranded DNA is quite high which can be off in lupus patients, RA, and occasionally in “normal” people.
Also my vitamin D is quite low.
Can anyone relate?
Also my doc is looking at me for lupus. Anyone 😀 ::)

Hi bethiemt & welcome to the foroum!
Me and several others have had blood tests, (CBC’s), which showed nothing abnormal. Some have tested various other things, such as thyroids, hormone levels, vitamin d levels, etc.
Many of us are low on vitamin d, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the cause.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that is different from cholinergic urticaria, and as far as I know the two are completely unrelated.

I had a test called something like the spinner test (probably wrong name). What they did was take my blood and “spin” it down until it seperated the plasma from the red blood cells. Then they took my plasma and injected it back into me which caused a significant reaction. It was the only thing my skin reacted to in the allergy test so they told me it was an auto immune condition. I was also tested for Thyroid but it came up negative.
The hives that are associated with Lupus will most likely leave a bruise behind which normal cholinergic urticaria does not unless you scratch it to hard. Hope this helped?

Hey Melissa,
Thanks for sharing that, and welcome to the forum ;D.
That was an interesting test, and I have read of those tests before. The interesting thing is, according to the couple of studies I found, is that some people with Cholinergic Urticaria experience a reaction, and some don’t when they are injected with their own serum. The article concluded that there may be 2 subsets of Cholinergic Urticaria, but it wasn’t conclusive.
I suspect that it is definitely autoimmune in some way. I just wish we could figure out how to stop it for good.

I recently did some blood tests, and everything was normal. These were the tests that my allegist recommended for cholinergic urticaria
Thyroid antibodies – normal
Immunology – normal
Fc epsilon receptor antibody (histamine release Cholinergic Urticaria) – normal
electrophoresis (protein electrophoresis serum) -normal

My dermatologist got back to me to tell me that ESR, CRP and thyroid functionings were normal from my two blood test results.
Does everyone else have these results?
And, can someone tell me a little about what ESR, and CRP is? I have no idea…
and other results which I have found is that my IgE was slightly risen… but that’s it.
So, i had a test to see if I was allergic to things like lactose, and some things came out positive but nothing which is considered to be hypersensitive to…

ESR is erythrocyte sedimentation rate, iow your red blood cell coagulation rate; they take blood and watch how fast it clots, as it naturally does. CRP is C-reactive protein, a protein made by the liver. Both ESR and CRP are used to test a general level of inflammation in the body, since they both increase during inflammation. I know that doesn’t tell you much, but that’s all I know.
My thyroid came back normal too. I haven’t gotten ESR or CRP tested.

Title: My Itchy Story – How to Cope
Post by: robbin on January 14, 2012, 10:46:11 PM

I have had itchy hives, welts and hot skin for several months now. Started out with my primary care physician, referred to a dermatologist, then back to my primary. I have had bloodwork done that showed nothing, a biopsy of one of my “bumps” that was inconclusive. ??? Yesterday my primary care doctor gave me information on Cholinergic Urticaria, he believes that is what I have. I’m pretty depressed about this since doing research and finding there is no cure and it can last for years or even the rest of my life.
All the different meds to try and see if they work. I can’t sleep well because I get too warm at night and wake up scratching. How do you deal with this? It’s been months since I haven’t been itching all the time, 24/7. I have had horses my entire life and there is no way that I can do my job caring for them without sweating.

Hello Robbin,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
I know this must be very difficult figuring out all of this, and also experiencing all of those itchy/painful symptoms. Even though this may be hard to accept right now, the truth is that Cholinergic Urticaria is not a death sentence, nor is it going to ruin your life. I’ve felt that same way, as have many others.
You can manage this and you can get it under control. Many many people here on the forum live thriving lives and have found solutions to managing this. This is no longer an issue for me at all, even though I suffered terribly for years and felt like my life was completely hopeless.
You need to maintain a positive attitude (I know it’s hard sometimes), and spend some time on this forum reading how others have been able to manage it. Also, you may want to read my blog to see all of the trials I’ve experienced, and what’s worked for me (specifically changing my diet, exercise, skin care, etc).
If you are proactive, and are willing to spend a lot of time reading information here, and then asking your doctor what may or may not work, then I feel you can definitely improve your life and get this under control.
Best wishes,
Hivesguy

Title: cholinergic urticaria : needles stinging

Hello everybody,
While searching the causes of cholinergic urticaria I came across your forum
so I registered to know more about it.
My sufferings go back to 3 years ago when I came home from work,
once I took off my clothes something like needles stinging my back, arms and legs
I felt a heat over these parts and suddenly it became all red , I couldn’t stop scratching, it was and it is unbearable for this is my endurance till today
I saw a dermatologist, she said it’s cholinergic urticaria and I need some blood tests.
Blood results were good and she told me that the causes are not known and that it may be stress or something psychological . she prescribed an antihistamine.
The problem is that I got addicted to it. If I forget my pill the symptoms appear
I have tried to stop the treatment and you can’t imagine the torture……. :'( :'(
I have the symptoms everyday everyday in all my body from head to feet and the result is that my skin is marked with scars out of scratching. No more resistance, I went to see another dermatologist who prescribed again an antihistamine for three months ; one pill a day then the dosage will be reduced regulary.
Also I was advised to use a cleansing gel (fragrance freed-high tolerance )
Everything is all right now since I started the treatment but buttttt
Antihistamine makes me sleepy + feeling tireddddd +getting some weight
My question is : am I supposed to use theses pills the rest of my life ????????
Does it have side effects ????
Ps : I’m 39 years old
Thank you in advance for answering or commenting
Excuse my English for I sometimes couldn’t find the right terms to express my case
Hear from you soon

Hello Meryam,
Thanks for your great post and welcome to the forum. I’m sorry to hear of your struggles with antihistamines.
To answer your question: Will you have to take pills the rest of your life? In most cases probably not. Antihistamines and other medications can be a great way to help cover some of the symptoms of Cholinergic Urticaria, especially in the short term.
A lot of people on this forum, including me, have been able to get their Cholinergic Urticaria under control by some other methods (whether it be other medications, diet, exercise, etc.). Also, Cholinergic Urticaria has a tendency to sometimes go away on its own after a number of years.
My advice would be to follow your doctor, of course, and to also read and research this forum to see what’s worked for others. Take the advice you read here, and talk with your doctor about it.
Thanks again for your post and best wishes,
Hivesguy

The only common denominator is that the blood thickens in colder climates. when the blood thins out in summer, suddenly we sweat with no problems whatsoever? what are your thoughts?? ive had this for 13 years. this year is the worse, but it has been milder than normal winter. body has a harder time mangaing a consistant temp. im thinking blood/autoimmune disorder

Hey dizz800,
There has been some evidence that cold urticaria could be linked to blood disorder (more specifically, cryoproteins in the blood). However, I’ve not seen any evidence that Cholinergic Urticaria could be linked in this way. It certainly could be possible though.
Also, while many people with Cholinergic Urticaria experience an increase in symptoms in the winter, many experience them year-round (even in tropical climates).
But, researchers do think that there are different subsets of Cholinergic Urticaria, so it is always possible there could be an odd protein reaction like you described in the blood. However, there just isn’t any strong evidence at this point to assume that’s involved with Cholinergic Urticaria (at least, not that I’ve read thus far).

Are you asking why you get hives in cold weather or are you asking why your Cholinergic Urticaria gets worse in the winter?
I know the answer to both.

In Winter time my Cholinergic Urticaria is usually very bad, but this year it’s hasn’t been so bad! Usually my attacks would come on after about 3 minutes of walking, but now I can walk 10 minutes before an attack will occur. But it will occur instantly if i’m outside for 5 minutes then go into a building where it’s warmer, that instantly triggers an attack but I try to ignore it or go to the toilet to allow it to calm down.
I’m not sure why it’s gotten better, my diet or routine hasn’t changed really. Anyway, i’m glad this year it hasn’t been so bad, I was dreading it before it was Winter. I’m really looking forward to Summer. I can usally just sweat easily even when sitting down in a hot room or walk for about 3 minutes, have a quick attack and continue with the day normally. 🙂
