List Your Ethnicity, Age, Sex for Cholinergic Urticaria Demographics
Post by: Rogerq23 on October 10, 2010, 05:02:36 PM
Hi everyone,
I want to post this new thread because i want all of us to post their profile and see what facts, details or whatever we have in common. By doing this we can conclude that this illness affect what more people of this gender, people are this age, people living in this kind of weather and/or people that are involved in this kind of activities or task. Maybe, this will help a lot to understand the facts that trigger this illness and we can notice important things. (General facts, not name) You can add other relevant things that you think it will help or get rid of some that you dont want to share (remember most if you just enter 2 the next poster will follow your partern and post 3, maybe? so keep it up)
Here is mine:
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian
Occupation: Student
Currently Living in: California (Dry weather)
Illness: Active (still have it)
Age: 20 y.o.
Allergies: Colorants, Cephalosporin, Outdoor allergies (pollen, mold, dust mites)
Major activities: I do not work/deal with random substances in my daily days, and no major activities.
Treatment: immunotherapy, benadryl, loratadine, lotions (is lotion a trigger?)
When did this illness started: 1 year ago, since I moved to California (dry weather)
I do not have in mind any other important thing… so i guess that is all for me… I think it is the location is the most important since i got this when i moved as i said earlier, and went back this illness stopped, came back to Cali and then the illness came back… I guess i should move to somewhere else like a humid city… I heard Seattle and Portland are good for allergies and they are not dry… but I am not interested in any of the universities in those areas..Bye bye California 🙁 I’ll miss you… I finnaly found my perfect place, but Cholinergic Urticaria doest let me leave… its a big trade off… so… its ur turn now.

Hey Rogerq23,
Great idea. We have sorta tried this in the past, but nothing has really jumped out. So far, it seems Cholinergic Urticaria affects all races, all geographic locations, all ages, and so forth. There really hasn’t been a common thread that has jumped out at me in all of the posts I have read here on the forum (which is basically every single post ever made, as I check them after they have posted).
Also, there is a similar thread here, which kinda does a similar thing.
But to reply here to, here is my info:
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Caucasion
Occupation: Self Employed
Currently Living in: Northeast Tennessee
Illness: Active (still have it); had it on/off the last 10 years
Age: 28 y.o.
Allergies: Never been tested, but definitely have intolerances to milk, dairy, and processed foods. Probably allergic to dust mites and pollen on some level too. Oh, and I am allergic to the sweating process of course =).
Major activities: Online activity mostly. But I am a handy man and do a lot of different things.
Treatment: Just about every major anithistamine except for allegra, steroid shot, too many homeopath and home remedies to list.
When did this illness started: Randomly when I was 18 years old in the winter.

Great post. When I first registered to this site, I was thinking about this same exact idea. Great that you started it for me. ;D
I guess if doctors can’t come up with a cure, us patients must come up with some sort of correlation ourselves. Here is my profile below.
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian (Japanese)
Occupation: Freelance artist, Part time supermarket work
Currently Living in: New York
Illness: Active
Age: 26 years old
Allergies: I have never been tested but did have typical allergies in my earlier life every Spring time but sort of went away after starting to exercise more often.
Major activities: Not much. Working on artworks.
Treatment: Prescribed topical cream (did not work), Benadryl (made it more itchy), Changing diets (no change), trying to work out (getting worse to the point where I can’t even walk 2 min outside anymore), most important for me now that I know there is no true cure: religion, Nichiren Buddhism.
When did this illness started: This year 2010 around the end of June.
I live in New York where we get all the seasons so I am not sure if the location changes much unless you lived in a completely different type of enviornment before but I’ve lived here since birth. The last few days were colder and seems my symptoms are getting 10x worse. If I try to jog, my entire body is covered with itchy rashes fron the neck down. Thanks for sharing your history.

Thanks for the posts and the link…
Well, it seems that it happens to people living in different type of weather… I forgot to mention that I try to use a special soap which is Cetaphil… for me it doesn’t even clean, but i guess i should cuz its not a random brand. It seems that many people tried different medicines and didnt work well.
@Hivesguy I cant imagine that it will last more than 10 years.. It is terrible!…
@shindayume The same here, i cant walk even 2 min in the sun… I get the hives immediately. So walking on the college campus is a challenge everyday. As we all do (I guess) we try to dissimulate. It is difficult to dissimulate when it are having so much pain and the school is crowded people look at you freaked out… I wonder why it mostly happen from the neck down. I hope you and all of us get cured… You got it since June, Can you imagine Hivesguy? 10~ And the fact that you said… that there is no cure… I hope you are darn wrong lol…
By the way… an extra information, when I was in my Country… Panama located in Central America, I didnt have this, but I usually coughed a lot around 4 months to stop coughing… When I do something and sweat a lot… my chest tends to itch a lot.. but not the feeling that Cholinergic urticaria has. Just normal itching and redness. Cholinergic urticaria has a feeling of itchiness and needles poking you.
Last time, I went to Wallgreen and saw a Cortisone lotion for the itch… Maybe I will try it someday…
I was researching and I found out one helpful website with a question (I will past it in here so I wont promote other party website, because I dont know if it is allowed in there)
Question:I was posted at a hill station about 14 years back. After four years i.e. 10 years ago, I started getting a burning sensation after taking a bath. After a years treatment at Dehradun and two years treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi, I left the medicine because they did not provide any relief. Now I have come to the conclusion that I am suffering with allergy from high humidity because after taking a bath for about 20-30 minutes I feel my body burns. After a rainfall, I feel the burning sensation again for quite some time, while in other seasons, the burning is less. When I go to the plains like Delhi, the burning is less after a bath but due to sweat, I feel sensation in my body like something is running on my body. Am I right to conclude that it is allergy to humidity? If yes, what is the solution?
Dr: I would have loved to know what your doctors at Dehradun and AIIMS had diagnosed. From your history I can make only a probable diagnosis of Cholinergic urticaria (after sweating), Water (aquagenic) urticaria, or aquagenic pruritus (itching). Aquagenic urticaria is a rare form of physical urticaria in which contact with any source of water (for example, sea or tap water) evokes hives. Aquagenic urticaria is a rare form of physical urticaria in which contact, the physical form of urticaria described in this question could be cholinergic urticaria. This occurs in approximately 15% of people at some time during their lives. It is most common in teenagers and young adults.
It carries a very good prognosis for eventual improvement. About half of the patients who experience this have other allergic illnesses. There are characteristically itchy, small, red papules that occur when heat stimulus is applied to the skin. It is caused by activation of cholinergic sympathetic intervention to the sweat glands and it often subsides in minutes after the patient cools. The occasional patient may also have chest symptoms associated with this condition. It responds well to a medication called hydroxyzine, which is an antihistamine. Aquagenic urticaria is a rare form of physical urticaria in which contact with any source of water (for example, sea or tap water) causes hives. It is a rare condition in which hives develop within 1 to 15 minutes after contact with water. The hives last for 10 to 120 minutes. Most investigators believe that this condition is actually exquisite skin sensitivity to additives in the water such as chlorine.
It has to be differentiated from. Aquagenic pruritus(itch), in which contact with water induces itching without skin lesions. Water urticaria is diagnosed by applying tap water and distilled water to the skin and observing the reaction. Local symptoms: Raised, itchy wheals with surrounding redness, especially on upper body Special features: Elevated blood histamine sometimes reported Diagnostic test: 35 degree C water compress on upper body skin for 30 minutes Avoid swimming, exercises causing sweating (a good doctor needs to check whether it is cholinergic urticaria)take bath rapidly and dry quickly. Water urticaria is treated with a cream called capsaicin that is applied to the irritated skin. Antihistamines are of questionable benefit since histamine is not the causative factor in water urticaria.

Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian, Japanese
Occupation: Dental Hygienist
Currently Living in: Southern California
Illness: Active, had it for 5 years
Age: 30
Allergies: dust, dander, pollen, foods such as fruits and vegetables, cleaning solutions, bleach, cigarette smoke
Other medical conditions: asthma, IBS, lactose intolerance, and of course I can’t sweat normally
Major activities: I workout daily, whether I am on medication or just suffering through it.
Treatments: I’ve tried acupuncture ($500 later, I still had hives & kinda worse than before). Claritin, Zyrtec, Xyzal, & Allegra. I had one other med, can’t remember the name but it knocked me out & I almost got into a car accident. =
I got tested for gluten intolerance, but I am not intolerant.
I’ve tried the dial soap that somebody posted about recently on a different post. That didn’t help me either. I have also tried to see if working out daily helps to control it… but, if it does, I can’t tell the difference.
OHHH… But one summer, I got very tan. I spend a day at the beach, one at Sea World, and then a day at Disneyland (3 days in a row). On those 3 days, I was just taking my regular Zyrtec but I had NO hives & it was a very hot 3 days. And for a while after that, my hives were a little more under control. Perhaps the Vit D theory is correct. I hope this helps.

I forgot to add::
I also have chronic dehydration. I’m assuming its due to my IBS. I know this because my bloodwork always shoes that I have low levels of electrolytes & have had to take potassium supplements.
Perhaps this is why I don’t sweat?!?

Nice summary… So many asians…? lol… does this affect more asians? or what? just wondering i don’t think so…
@Chrissy I should take vit D and lets see if it helps me. It seems like you have taken a lot of med and didn’t work efficiently. I guess Dial soap might be a little bit to “strong” for our skin illness. I cant sweat either in California, i used to sweat a lot in my home country… (my chest, forehead, nose) Some people think they are allergic to the sweat? but i dont think so why i havent heard anyone complaining about the itch in the armpits? Mine have never itched.
@Tokyowoman wao you are close to me… you seems to be from Sillicon Valley (software eng.) just deducing from it. These days are so hot i dont know why… here in Bay Area. I hope the cold weather will come back soon. I guess its not that good to take medication every single day, your body will get used to it and the meds will not help you anymore (they wont make any effect) I am not professional, but it is just an opinion. I guess you should not take probiotics for your immune system, take vitamin C instead! Dairy products reduce the effect of medications that you are taking, maybe that is the reason that they dont help you a lot. I have read from previous post that stress can make this illness worst… (when your dad passed away) Sorry to hear that…!

Rogerq23,
I don’t know how much it has to do with ethnicity… :-
I once heard a news story about how some Japanese people lack sweat glands. I thought that was wonderful b/c that mean I wouldn’t sweat & smell… I’d take stinky sweat over Cholinergic Urticaria any day!
And I don’t think we’re allergic to sweat b/c many people on here said they don’t even sweat. Ugh… so many questions!
By the way HivesGuy, Thanks for starting & managing this forum! Its very impressive & so informative! It must take so much of your time & I appreciate it!! ;D

Great thread. We have very similar profiles too, OP.
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian
Occupation: Student
Currently Living in: New York [winter terrible for hives], but I go to school in SoCal, and I’ll be in China in a couple of weeks.
Illness: Active
Age: 20
Allergies: shellfish, dustmites
Major activities: Exercise, lots of it. Working out a minimum of 2-3 hours a day.
Treatment: Meditation (TRY IT!) for stress relief, Vitamin B supplement, but mostly EXERCISE. I live a bodybuilding lifestyle and I sweat buckets (literally all of my t-shirts are drenched in sweat) everyday as a result of the vigorous exercise. Tried all types of antihistamines and diet modification, but the only effective treatment has been exercise (Vitamin B helps bring on the sweat faster). I am now experimenting with a stress relief regimen (meditation, and various anti-anxiety, anti-depression, and stress relief supplements), as well as dust-mite proofing my bed and room.
When did this illness started: Late 2005, a very stressful period of my life. No signs of remission, but I’ve grown tough mentally and just take the pain.

@White Rice, I have tried Allegra back in my country and it works fine, but it wasnt for Cholinergic Urticaria cuz i didnt have it over there. I want to try it in here to see if it will help me with my Cholinergic Urticaria. I take loratadine daily, as we all know they are quite small, but Allegra is a big tablet and I heard from my dad that its a very strong medicine and its not good to take it in a daily basis, obviously its not good to take any medication in a daily basis, but if its work for Cholinergic Urticaria, then should I take the risk of taking it in a daily basis? Another question is where can i get Allegra, do i need a prescription? i have never got that in here, US. You just got Cholinergic Urticaria few weeks ago… hopefully we will get a relief from somewhere or something. Keep contributing to the forum! to get a way out of this.
@Duper, So where is worst for ur hives? SoCal or NY? two different weather one dry and one humid, do you see a difference between both place? When you go to China see if you still have it there!, usually when i got out of US i dont have it after the first week of being outside, but i do have like 2-3 break outs in the first week after that, none. Wow, are you taking a medication beside supplements and meditation. Im taking vitamin B too but i ran out of it. So how do all those things work help you?

@ Roger,
To answer your questions about Allegra–It is prescription only right now, and you have to go to a doctor (any should work) to get it. It will be available for purchase over the counter at your local retail stores (no prescription required) in early March (March 4 is the release date I think).
Like you said, no medication is safe to take daily, and all cause side effects. However, Allegra is safe for children as young as 2 years old (according to its label). So it is safe if you follow doctors orders and don’t take too much. What I do with antihistamines is I don’t take them at all on days when I am just at home. But I take them if I am going to be out or doing something physical.

I stopped antihistamines, but I will take like half a zyrtec every few weeks. Initially the pain was unbearable, but I’ve disciplined my mind to stand it (meditations helps with this too). My Cholinergic Urticaria is better in NY summers, since the humidity makes it every easy to sweat whilst I’m exercising, but NY winters are terrible since it is very difficult to break a sweat in the cold. I like living in SoCal a lot since it’s always warm, so believe it or not I am usually outside shirtless and nobody has any idea that I have Cholinergic Urticaria. I accomplish this by doing very intense cardio every morning and breaking a sweat, afterwards I am able to sweat like a normal person for the rest of the day (maybe even more than a normal person). I RECOMMEND THIS FOR EVERYONE.
Like I mentioned, I live a bodybuilding lifestyle and would be very glad to give anybody advice. I realize how easy it is to fall into a sedentary lifestyle because of Cholinergic Urticaria, but you have to realize there is a possibility that you won’t find a cure. You can’t just wait around, you have to go outside and live. If you allow your physical health to dwindle just because you can’t stand the pricks on your skin or the way people look at you in the gym because of your rashy face, you’ve already lost.
However, I understand there is a certain population of people with Cholinergic Urticaria who also suffer from exercise-induced anaphylaxis; so if you begin to feel nausea, extreme difficulty breathing etc, please talk to your doctor before starting an exercise regimen.
In case anyone is interesting, the supplements I am taking now for stress relief are L-tryptophan, melatonin, and 5-HTP. Additionally, I have suffered from anxiety issues (hives also break out in situations when I am stressed out, angry, nervous, etc), so I have ordered GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) which is supposed to help me with anxiety.
I have taken on a personal research project on Cholinergic Urticaria, although I have not had the time to really dig in. Using my university’s database, I have accumulated (at the moment) 39 articles on Cholinergic Urticaria, Cholinergic Urticaria treatment, skin disorders, and the relationship between stress and skin. If anyone is interested, I can share these files online and we could work on this together.

Is taking half Zyrtec daily for a week going to work? Zyrtec is so small. I have always doubted about this small histamine because of their size. Well, I really admire you since you have a very active exercise regimen. I wish I am that brave to do it. I Love Living in California, but i guess i will do the opposite of what you did. I will move to the humid area of the country when I transfer for school and see it my Cholinergic Urticaria disappear. Hopefully it does. Since SoCal is kinda dry, I dont know how can you life with it.
Your words really encourage people to go to exercise in gyms. It is true that we should not care about what people think, but its not that easy for some people. Maybe your Cholinergic Urticaria isnt that strong for you as for others. You said your are usually shirtless, i guess i am shirtless and if i start to feel a prickling sensation, i will get nervous and then it will be worst.
Where do you get these supplements for stress relief and anxiety? do you need a prescription from a doctor or what?
Please after your trip to China, update us about it. It will be so helpful if you compile what you got in your research about Cholinergic Urticaria and post it here, or attach a document.

I think you should stay on your antihistamines if you cannot find another way of dealing with it. Cholinergic Urticaria invariably makes life very difficult, and we all need a way to cope; I’ve just been fortunate in that I’ve found a way to keep things under control without medication.
I skipped past a previous question of yours; I’ve been to China before and my Cholinergic Urticaria continued for the 4 weeks I was there, even though it was quite humid out. I will be going to Beijing in a few weeks, very dry and very cold: probably the worst combination possible for Cholinergic Urticaria; I’ll let you guys know how it goes.
The supplements I’m currently experimenting with can all be found online; I ordered mine from Amazon.com (cheap, fast, and reliable). I started with melatonin 3mg last night and it appears to be helping, but that could just be from placebo. I noticed my underarms are beginning to sweat A LOT more, so I may attribute that to it. Tonight, I’ve added l-trypotphan to the combination and look forward to seeing what it does. Additionally, I take a multivitamin and fish oil to promote general well being.

Well, good luck in Beijing. I have heard from someone that went there and was feeling itchy. I might someday google your supplements and try them.
I wish I could stop taking antihistamine that often, but lately i really needed it. Every time i walk to my class and i sit in the classroom i have a break out, i cant stand the sensation and i quickly take one antihistamine, I dont know if its the heater so hot or because of the walk or both…

In Beijing (definitely not a Cholinergic Urticaria friendly city, terrible pollution, no humidity); overall horrible.
I am currently essentially ~99% hive free. I still get itches, but not really as bad.
It is a weird feeling. Honestly, 5+ years of living with this and having getting relief is a very very odd feeling.
I definitely think it was my new dust-mite proof sheets + pillow case that did the trick (I am SEVERELY allergic to it, like level-5 allergy). (I haven’t really taken the 5-htp or l-tryptophan recently so I don’t think it’s helped that much, although I definitely recommend melatonin for stress relief, which aids in mitigating Cholinergic Urticaria in my experience). If anyone has allergies to dust mites (or whatever your allergy tests may tell you), do as much as you can to eliminate that allergy from your environment. If it doesn’t help your Cholinergic Urticaria, at least you can begin to narrow down the cause of your Cholinergic Urticaria. Idiopathic is a very depressing word often used to describe Cholinergic Urticaria; but I’m beginning to think Cholinergic Urticaria may have several different causes, which is why for some of us it’s seasonal (not me), for some it’s very severe, etc.

When did this illness started: 2 years ago I had a lot of stress because of a break up and quit to study that time, my corstisol level ( a stress hormone ) was way too high said my doctor (now its normal again).
It was spring and as usual my pollen allergy started. with all of the stress and allergy THE HIVES APPEARED for the first time…
I recognized that many persons are allergic to dustmites and pollen!

Gender: Female
Occupation: Student
Age: 14 years
Location: Ohio
Illness: 4 long, itchy years. Active and in full effect currently. Started mildly and has become progressively worse. Hives are worst after eating within 12 hours of reaction and during menstrual cycle.
Allergies: Unknown mostly. Severe mold allergy. I had a test once but it was too risky to go off of my antihistamines to get accurate results.
Other major medical conditions: Mood disorder that started right about the time this condition started. I always feel fatigued.
Major Activities: Used to hike a lot but that can’t happen much anymore thanks to Cholinergic Urticaria.
Treatments: ZYRTEC worked well at first when I only got mild hives at ten years old. Then gradually Cholinergic Urticaria worsened and it wasn’t strong enough, but helps a little. PEPCID doesn’t help the appearance of the hive but makes me feel less itchy. ALLEGRA- I’m not sure if it helps at all. CYPROHEPTADINE took my hives and swelling down a great deal but makes me sleepyand revenously hungry. DAPSONE helps hives and swelling drastically but does not completely knock it out. Dapsone also lowers immunity and reduced my red blood cell count. I am on all those meds right now, but still have too many hives. I tried PREDNISONE which is a steroid. knocked condition out completely but caused major mood issues and is never supposed to be a long term drug.
BEST IMPROVEMENT IS NOT EATING FOR OVER TWELVE HOURS! ALMOST NO HIVES THEN NO MATTER HOW MUCH I RUN AROUND OR HOW HOT MY SHOWER IS!!! G

Hey guys, new here, another one to the list, Been struggling with this for about 4 years now and it’s good to know im not the only one with this seemingly unusual and weird disease.
I’ve been reading a lot, and one thing that dragged my attention is that, acording to what i’ve read, ALL if not most of us are light skinned people right?, or is anybody here actually dark/brownish skinned?, Im light skinned myself, what about you? could it be that it only affects light skinned people?
Regards

Hey yash,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
Nope–Cholinergic Urticaria hits all skin colors and races. There are Asians, Caucasian, Olive Skin, Dark Skin, Hispanic, etc. etc. on this forum.
Any skin color can be cursed ;D

I am doing this on behalf of my son as he won’t. It has been a long road for my son & watching him going through this, turning his life upside down, dropping out of school & not being able to leave the house until summer. Some days I don’t sleep much, his emotions are so up & down. Luckily he has so many friends that are understanding & they come & visit as they know he is ill.

Does anyone on here live with loved ones, how do they cope? I cannot even imagine the pain you all go through, i can only imagine it 2nd hand. The worse part is it controls your life.
