Hi. I’m a 17-year-old guy, and I was just diagnosed today with this thing by a skin doctor. I have had this condition for 3-4 years though. It gets severe during the winters.
My doctor recommended I take the following medications:
- Deflazacort and Fexofenadine (10 tablets- after breakfast)
Are these safe? How actually would these help me? It’s my first time visiting this doctor, so I’m kinda suspicious and afraid to ask him. Please try to be specific as possible.
Thanks,
Naman

Hello, Naman. Fexofenadine is the generic name for Allegra, an antihistamine that is now sold over the counter here in the U.S. Many people with cholinergic urticaria have taken it (its effectiveness varies per person).
Deflazacort is a glucocorticoid / immune suppressant. Immune suppressants are sometimes used as a treatment for allergic disorders, but they can have side effects if the treatment continues long term.
Whether these medications are safe for you personally (and at what dose) is a question best left for doctors who can view your specific health history. If you feel unsure about the prescribed treatment, you might want to get a second opinion.
I can tell you that antihistamines are a very common treatment for cholinergic urticaria, and immune suppressants are sometimes prescribed as well, though they aren’t ideal as a long-term treatment in most cases.
At the very minimum, you might want to research common side effects for those drugs (especially Deflazacort), and be on the lookout for those side effects if you begin taking it.
I hope that helps!

Typically they start you off with zertac, unless you have any immunology conditions, it’s sounds outrages. After you have exhausted the otc options you would then go to Zolair which helps almost all CIU. THen the next step would be gabapentin and cymbalta. UNLess necessary i would not go to the immunology or steroids.

I’ve had luck with acupuncture. Also eating much less processed foods and less sugar.

4 25mg Benadryl about 3 times a day worked for me (so a total of 12 a day). No idea if this is good for you long term but honestly I didn’t care because I couldn’t live with this issue.
