Zyrtec (Cetirizine) For Cholinergic Urticaria and Hives?
Post by: mazefall on April 18, 2009, 11:55:40 PM
HEY Guys
long time i haven’t posted anything, based on my exams in school :-. well i went to the dermatologist two weeks ago, and i prayed that my dermatologist wont prescribe me any antihistamines. i told him i tried those before and it does not work( seriously, i was praying), and only makes me drowsy, and he says” well have you tried zirtec?, i said “hnnnnn no” so he told me that zirtec really works. so he prescribed me the zirtec, i tried it for 4 day, and guess what?
NO HIVES, not a single hive. i thought that the zirtec would be for the iching needle stinging sensation( however the zirtec does relieve the stinging a bit, unless you sweat it out, itll work) but it mostly had effect on the hives. Since then i have not seen no hives, LITERALLY.
The bottom line is that i dont mind the hives, it does not bother me, only if i can trade the hives with the itching needle feeling, i would. So there you have it guys, try it, it may work on some or could even work on both the hives and and the itching needles ::)
GUUD LUCK 😀

Thanks so much for the update & for sharing your experience Mazefall. I agree that zyrtec does seem to help some people a lot. I recently tried it as well, and it did help some, but not 100%. I still had a hives attack.
But I do agree with you, and I think it helps some people more than others!
Thanks again for the update!
Also, I did a comparison of Zyrtec vs Allegra you may want to read.

I get flat red dots that don’t itch when I take zyrtec. It does something but still doesn’t stop the skin from reacting somehow.

I get more red dots and shorter stinging durations.
Works, but not a 100% cure.

Hello anjewelize,
Excellent post & welcome to the forum!
That reaction sounds terrible! I hope it isn’t the Zyrtec causing it, although it sounds like you may very well be allergic to it or something.
That is interesting that the Claritin-D works so well for you. I have tried Claritin, although I don’t think I have ever tried the “D” version.
One thing I have noticed is that Cholinergic urticaria people do seem to have different experiences with antihistimines. Some can use Zyrtec with good results, others hydroxyzine, others Claritin, etc. So I definitely think people should try different ones slowly over time to see which ones are most effective.
Thanks again for the great post & welcome to the forum!

Yes, I suppose they are just variations in spelling of the same word. The brand is actually Zyrtec, and the active ingredient (for those who may buy generics), is cetirizine. But people sometimes spell it differently.

I take the generic Zyrtek about 20 min. before I shower. I don’t get hives or itchy when I remember to take it. If I don’t, I get
the hives that look like mosquito bites all over my face, back and chest.

Title: Cholinergic Urticaria—BAD Zyrtec Experience

I took 4 Zyrtec 10mg pills in a total of 4-6 hours.
Didn’t really effect hives much. Minimal reduction of pain.
But… for the last 2 days I’ve been sleeping 10-12 hours a day.
I scheduled a doctor’s appt.
Just a warning to others…. do not take excess of Zyrtec… it WILL cause excessive drowsiness.
I’m hoping running each day will reverse this problem faster.
I’m fine… except for being very sleepy and a mild headache… I think it’s starting to wear off.
But Now I’m stuck in night mode… my body clock is messed up. I’m hoping running will fix this. Running has been the missing ingredient in my life for the past year.

Wow, that is a lot of zyrtec. I would definitely cut them back and check with a doctor. I hope you get to feeling better again soon.
I have never taken more than 1 in a 24 hour period. I am getting frustrated with antihistamines again. Even the Zyrtec D, it isn’t working well, and makes me a little drowsy now. So I am about to just forget about them all together and experience the hives for a few minutes and try to tough it out.
Good luck with everything, and I hope the running helps.

Dude that’s crazy! I’ve never take more than 1 in a day, hopefully nothing serious happens cause I do know medicine in excess can destroy you liver, kidneys, and everything else pretty much 😮
I’m currently experimenting with a combination of Zyrtec and Zantac (1 of each in a 24 hour period). Zantac is that heartburn medicine but it’s also an antihistamine.

Are you out of your mind? I’m reading the back of the Zyrtec box right now:
Zyrtec 5mg tablets
Directions – Adults and children 12 years or older – take 1 tablet every 12 hours; DO NOT take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. That means you took 4 times the daily dose in 4-6 hours since you had 10mg tablets.
This isn’t a bad Zyrtec experience. It’s a bad following directions and not eating pills like candy experience.

Title: HELP Alternative

Hi,
I’m a 17 year old male, live in Toronto where it’s nice and cold, and I’ve been struggling with Cholinergic Urticaria since I was 14-15. This condition has really affected my teenage years and has caused me a great deal of distress and regret- it’s hard for me to even talk to girls sometimes (nervous+warm=attack). It’s always worse in the winter; I can only pray it will eventually go away as I get older.
About three weeks ago, since it has really been getting to me, I acquired some cetirizine (10mg/day) and it has been working quite well. There have been circumstances where I should have been having attacks but I either didn’t or I felt the attack about to happen but then it stopped and didn’t occur. Unfortunately, the cetirizine is causing me to have really bad headaches and it makes my head feel quite heavy; thus, I can’t focus to well in class. For this reason, I can not continue to take this drug. If I had to choose my poison I rather the acute severe attacks than the chronic severe headaches. Perhaps right now because I’m having a bad butt headache instead ;D
What I need to know is if there are any medications that has comparable efficacy to cetirizine minus the severe headaches, heavy head?
and of course without adding any other side effect like big time drowsiness or physcmotor retardation ?
Input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hey Starz,
Excellent post and thanks for sharing that :).
There are a lot of antihistamines out there. Probably the best one would be Allegra (fexofenadine). This one is supposed to cause much less drowsiness than others due to the fact that it doesn’t cross the blood/brain barrier as easily as other antihistamines do. At this time, this antihistamine is available by prescription only. However, it will be available over the counter across the country sometime in the spring of this year (2011).
If that one doesn’t work, I would advise you to work with a doctor and try many different kinds over a period of time to see which one works best while causing the least amount of side effects.
You may want to talk to a doctor about it, and I hope that helps you out.
Best of luck,
Hivesguy

Title: Zyrtec Results – First time user – First post

Hi guys,
Been suffering with what i assume is Cholinergic Urticaria for 2.5 years – Basically i dont get any visual symptons (except for a mild red flush) but i get the extreme itchy / pain feeling when i begin to sweat (feels like thousands of tiny needles prickling me). I only mainly get it on my scalp, sometimes very mildly on diff spots on my face + mildy on my lower back / neck etc.
Something i might add before i talk about my results with zyrtec – call me dumb but im in the process of gettin dreads i.e my scalp is usually fairly flakey, but i am passionate about them so its not an option to stop the process. i do wash my hair every 3-4 days with a natural sensitive skin shampoo followed by Apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse. Another thing id liek to add is that about 14 months ago i had the pains kind of under control as i was basically soaking my head in a 50/50 (ACV:water) mix and for a few weeks i barely noticed the pains. so if anyone is desperate for something new they can try that.
Anyways onto my Zyrtec experience.. yesterday i bought a 10 pack just to try it out.. all i can say is that this stuff is pretty darn amazing. it felt so freakin good to be able to exercise and not get depressed and feel pain.. it was wierd because it wasn’t 100% gone, what was happening is i would feel a pin prick pain and it would be gone instantly. usually the pin prick pains would stay until i started to sweat (they would also occur more often). if i could put a numerical value on the amount it reduced the pain i would say its about a 95% reduction in prickle / pain / itching.. one word.. EPIC!
i guess the next question is: will i be taking this the rest of my life?? and if so are there any known long term effects of zyrtec??

Title: Does this happen with your Cholinergic Urticaria?

Ive had excercise induced cholinergic urticaria for over a year. If I dont take my antihistamine (cetrizine hydrochloride), I will get the typical symptoms, hives, itchiness, etc. If I take my antihistamine, I don’t get itchy, but I still get a red rash all over my face, arms, etc. when my body temp. rises. Does this happen with your cholinergic urticaria? Just wondering if I have something else going on here too….
Thanks!
