Candida Albicans (Yeast) and Cholinergic Urticaria. Could yeast cause cholinergic urticaria? Or could removing yeast help treat cholinergic urticaria?

Here’s what’s helping me.
Posted: 07-15-08 12:11pm
Okay, I have had Cholinergic Urticaria for about 8 years now. It has varied in it’s severity but never goes away. I had tried everything, doctors are useless just prescribing antihistamines and saying I have to live with it, well that wasn’t an option for me, I tried naturopathic and holistic approaches which helped but didn’t get rid of Cholinergic Urticaria.
I decided I was going to fix this myself so after extensive research on the internet (I love the internet!) first I did the Master Cleanse detox which after 12 days knocked down my rash to almost nothing but when I started eating normally my Cholinergic Urticaria came right back. I then did an elimination diet look for a specific food that was causing the Cholinergic Urticaria and found that any foods that contained sugar made my Cholinergic Urticaria symptoms worse, this was any sugars complex (carbohydrates) or simple sugars.
After researching what symptoms are worsened by sugar I came across a yeast/fungal infection (Candida)…… at first I was like this can’t be it yeast infections usually only affect women and have different symptoms. But everything seemed to fit with me, my Cholinergic Urticaria seem to start after I took antibiotics which is known to kill good bacteria leading to a yeast/fungal infection.
So for 3 weeks now I have removed food that contain sugar from my diet and taking anti fungal medicine ( there is tons some of the natural ones are garlic, goldenseal, coconut oil, olive oil, black walnut) Just look it up you’ll find lots of stuff or there is medicine for this that contain a mixture of anti fungal ingredients. Also you need to replace the bad fungal bacteria you kill off with good bacteria from probiotics.
Anyway, I am about 99% rid of my Cholinergic Urticaria I hardly ever feel anything I can still feel it in my body when I heat up but it never starts hurting or itching, I think I can knock this thing out completely if I maintain this approach. Several different sites said permanently getting rid of Candida (which I think is causing my Cholinergic Urticaria) can take 3-4 months, before you can go back to eating normally.
While this approach hasn’t been easy or fun it has totally been worth if for me and I really hope this is what is causing Cholinergic Urticaria for other of you suffering from this crappy condition, no one should have to live with this and have doctors just shrug if off and try to cover it up with anti-histamines.
Sorry at how long this post was, I will post again after a few weeks with an update. If anyone want to talk to me more about this let me know and we can talk over email. Good luck, I’m not crazy if this post makes me seem that way, I was just tired of living with Cholinergic Urticaria and want to help out other if possible.

Very interesting post JGA & thanks for sharing the info!
Candida is something I do find interesting. Especially the part about antibiotics. I did have a course of antibiotics during the summer before I got Cholinergic Urticaria. I had a bad case of strep throat, and treated it during my spring break (high school graduation) in June.
I first noticed the Cholinergic Urticaria probably around November or December a few months later. So not an immediate response after the antibiotics, but perhaps if this is true the “candida” could have been building up over that time?
So I find it interesting because 1) I did take antibiotics a few months before getting Cholinergic Urticaria, and (2) I also consumed a lot of very high sugary foods in more quantities than I knew I should have-which apparently candida lives on sugary food.
I am trying to leave every option on the table, and right now that still includes diet, possible candida, etc.
I am thinking about going on a mostly anti-candida type diet, which will cut out most foods that candida thrive on. But I won’t do that until I finish this diet.
Has anyone else thought of Candida, tried a Candida treatment, or did you get Cholinergic Urticaria after a course of antibiotics?
I may make a detailed post soon on candida after a little more research because this post reminded me of lot of interest in my mind. Also, I may put up a poll to see if anyone else has had any results or tried a candida diet/treatment.
Thanks again for the great info!
UPDATE: 12/16/14. I no longer suspect that Candida is a cause for most people’s hives. Here is a video explanation:

I’ve tried a candida cleanse; I can’t remember which brand though. My condition did not improve at all, but you guys shouldn’t automatically dismiss the possibility. I had done the cleanse about 2 years ago, and I was reconsidering doing it again this summer. Instead I went with an a liver cleanse, and a colon cleanse. They alleviated the itch while I was on the pills; but once I stopped taking them, Cholinergic Urticaria went back to normal. =/

Thank you for sharing your experience with Candida Duper.
Perhaps it isn’t the cause then since you have tried it, and didn’t really see a big improvement. I also seen a couple of other sites where people with Cholinergic Urticaria have tried it but it didn’t have a huge impact either. But then again, some people claim it has really helped or even cured it. But even though Candida could be possible cause, I myself am a little skeptical.
I don’t think I am necessarily going to buy a “cleanse” type product. Instead, I may try to incorporate more “anti-candida” foods into my diet, but that is probably as far as I will take it.
I just wish we could find SOMETHING that was causing this. Perhaps it could be something different with everyone. But I at least wish we could have a definitive answer.
The thing that throws me off the most, is that people sometimes just “get cured.” So what is it? Diet? Genetics? Infection (bacterial/yeast/etc.), or what? Hopefully one day we can all find out.

i just started the candida cleanse diet a week before, and what i know is, its working. ;D. well, first thing is that im not completing sure, because the weather has become very humid and hot, but the thing that i remarked was that i didn’t get any itching before the sweating occurred.
back in the days when i had the intense pricking, needle, pins sensations with of course the hives, i couldn’t stand the heat, but what i realize is that cold brings you relief( of course) but sweating it out might really hurt, but would give you more relief than temporally relief. what i mean is that you must get through pain, so the pain you just endure wont show for a few day. since that happened, i thought i was completed cure, the symptoms didn’t show, i started sweating grazy :o, and the hives where unnoticeable.but it was too good to be true, because the symptoms came back a month later( which drove me insane) with more intense pins and needle, i lost complete hope.
but then again i kept on reading the post from Cholinergic Urticaria sufferers which posted that a candida cleanse helped them with their Cholinergic Urticaria. so i tried the candida cleanse method( cut out sugar intakes, no wheat, rice or bread) for a week now, i didnt noticed any symptoms than i did the week before that. so like i say, in not 100% sure if it would work for others, but trying wont hurt? so ill keep you guys posted 8)

Thanks for the great post mazefall! I appreciate your keeping us updated on the situation!
I agree with you that you shouldn’t get too excited just in case it is just an up and down cycle of cholinergic uritcaria (heat hives).
But it is great that you are getting some relief, and I am excited myself…SO PLEASE keep us updated on your progress!

its been almost 2 weeks from now, and the candida diet method, worked ;D. Basically avoiding sugar at all cost is a difficult thing to do, but it is the most effective thing you can do to avoid the symptoms to come back. what also worked was getting rid of any starch like potatoes and rice, and also to watch out for bread( very hard to resist), getting rid of toxins by drinking lots of water and sweating it out. i started to go back to my normal diet( takes about 2 month for the candida diet to work effectively) and what i realize is that the symptoms came back when i started to eat bread and drinking milk. so i will keep on doing the diet until everything is sort out, so i recommend people to try it :-
don’t lose hope, very bad 🙁

Congrats on the diet! It is great to hear you had some very positive results. I am also going to be trying this type of a diet. That is also interesting how the symptoms came right back when you ate milk and bread.
Do you think you could have an unknown milk intolerance or allergy? I definitely think I have some kind of mild milk allergy or intolerance due to these rashes I will get when I consume a lot of milk.
Anyways, thanks for the great post. Please let us know if it turns out well, and any results you see over the next few weeks. I will also keep everyone updated as well. It would be great to kick this stupid itchy cholinergic urticaria once and for all!

i think i’m kinda of a milk intolerance because each time i consume dairy food like cheese, and milk the symptoms worsen. i once remember( before the Cholinergic Urticaria came) that i was the only one in my family that consumed more than enough milk, everyday about 3 cups of milk( i was a milky type of person ::)). So maybe the Cholinergic Urticaria was building up before i even noticed i had it. so milk may be( may be!!) one of cause for cholinergic urticaria.

Yeah, milk does make it worse for me, but I still haven’t for sure found milk (or any other foods) the cause. But I have cut it out of my diet for a while. I wonder if anyone else has noticed any food connection? Does anyone get any kind of rashes or eczema and also have the cholinergic urticaria?

Ive definitely seen a food connection. For example yesterday I woke up to late and only managed to have a few rivita things for breakfast.. i then went to college where one of my classes was extremely hot (pretty cold outside at the moment), i was burning up and was sure the hives were going to come and cover me but they didnt. I didnt get hives all day. then when at home later in the day, i had some really spicy/meaty fajitas! about 30 mins after eating them, i had a little moment where i get extremely hot, but this time i got hives all over my arms.
But maybe its nothing.. anybody else? I’m quite tempted to try this diet.

Yes, I am still thinking there is some type of diet connection, but at this point I am not sure what it is. It could Candida, food allergy, etc.
I am on a diet right now, but ate something I didn’t think had milk in it (but it turned out that it did), and I was sick, and my hives were 100 times more reactive and intense. When I actually did a diet a while back, they were way better for a long time (but the diet wasn’t as strict as I wanted it).
So I am back on a diet now, and I am hoping they will get better. It is just so hard to do a strict diet, because after a day or two you will start craving foods like crazy. I think it is some kind of food addiction, since there may be allergy or candida involved. It sucks. But I am going to try to get through it.
My wife and I are going grocery shopping tomorrow, and I am going to load up on veggies, lean mean, fruit, and maybe a couple of other all natural gluten/milk free foods. I am going to try to limit sugar as much as possible, and also limit starchy foods and rice a little more.
I hope it works out well. If you try any type of diet, please let us know the results.
Anyone else tried a diet or considering trying a diet to see if it helps the Cholinergic Urticaria??

Title: My success story
Post by: beppley on October 18, 2009, 11:04:18 AM
——————————————————————————–
I had chronic hives for over 3 years. They first appeared in the bottoms of my feet. Felt like golf balls in the arches. I thought, that’s strange but thought little of it. Then my belt line flared up. Then, anywhere my sheets contacted skin in a bunched up fashion flared up. Eventually my whole torso looked like a battle field. Hot, sore, itchy, just awful. Of course I went online and studied studied studied. I discovered this thing I’d never heard of. Chronic Urticaria. So all things seemed to point to Liver tests, allergy tests, etc…I started eliminating common allergy foods, dairy-wheat. Started sleeping in another bed(to avoid down fill, detergents, etc..).
The hives would ebb and flow but never go away. I started oatmeal baths. No luck. I’ve meditated for years so stress was not an issue. Although, once the hives started I was a bit stressed. I wanted to start riding my bike again but quickly realized my butt flared up to the point I couldn’t sit properly the next day. I’ve been healthy my whole life and this was killing me! I personally feel that doctors and especially surgeons have their place in life. But, when it comes to chronic conditions I feel they don’t always look for the cause. I did.
So after struggling for 3 years with this I looked back at what I was doing when this all started. My research had led me in the direction of a possible fungal or yeast infection. At this point I would ask anyone reading this if they have been on antibiotics at some point before their issue. I just happened to be a beer homebrewer.
In fact I brewed belgian beer which has a yeast strain that prefers temperatures around 98 degrees f.You know our body temps. In fact I would consume active yeast and then eat food that contained sugars. The result….fermentation within the body! Yeast needs sugar! Normally our good gut bacteria can handle this but if you are on antibiotics the good gut bacteria is also killed. Anyone who has seen yeast in action knows it multiplies at a phenomenal rate. You don’t have to be a brewer for this to have an effect.
Take an antibiotic… eat grains…sugars… the yeast will start to take over. Ladies, have you ever had a yeast infection after taking antibiotics? Men, you just didn’t know it. I have been hive free for over 2 years. My best advise would have to be eliminate all grains, simple sugars. That means no pasta, potatoes, wheat, oats at a minimum. Eat raw nuts no peanut oil or peanuts. Do eat- protein, veggies, sour fruits. The key is you have a fungal infection and it needs to be starved.
Yes nystatin is an antifungal as well as some others, but folks this is free. There are many homeopathic things to take as anti fungals, Grape seed extract, grapefruit seed extract, but I think with serious devotion diet will take care of it. Consider what you’ve been through with doctors. I know what it’s like to suffer and I just hope someone will benefit from this.

Dear Bepley,
Thanks for the account of your suffering, it is really very fundamental and makes sense to me. Yeast is a dangerous thing a parasite that could kill you in the long run if not treated with a heavy hand on time.
When my itching started (it was a 24/7 itching only with no redness of skin or any other symptoms of Cholinergic Urticaria in general) about 4+ years ago, I felt craving for sugary food all day long. Now I am not a sugar fan, hardly eat chocolates or cakes. This was weird. I used to go into the kitchen and have a spoonful of sugar just to calm the sugar urge. Strange, but true. So my doctor treated me for a poor level of haemoglobin in the body after my blood test and told me that it was the only reason for the itch.
Anaemia or poor haemoglobin causes itching as per this link and many more on the net. It also makes one ear more sugary things.
“Anaemia is associated with: weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, irritability, restlessness, drowsiness, poor concentration, headaches, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ease of fatigue, sugar cravings, palpitations”
Thanks a lot
James

Title: Candida Albicans and Cholinergic Urticaria

Hi!, I wrote the last post about sleeping and I’ve been trying to sleep 8 hours a day maximum but this is very very difficult for me, anyway I dont think this is the main problem for the Cholinergic Urticaria (I had checked my thyroid months ago). I’ve been reading your blog now (HivesGuy) and I’ve read many familiar issues but the one I’m very curious is the post about Candida. What happened at last?? Time ago I thought the same, I have the same tongue-caracteristics and bad stomach as well.
Now I think that this is probably the way to be like any other urticaria, think that this is in our DNA or something, but time ago I did some test and it were negatives about candida (although some medicians-homeopatic (usually lying) say its very difficult to detect and the normal exams dont work). The symptoms are very similar to mine but finally I stopped thinking about candida because I didnt have it. I wanted to know if you took the antifungus or what, I also tried probiotics (I wrote here about that) and nothing.
But I have to confess is that the best time I’ve been with the Cholinergic Urticaria is when I started with natural yogurts without sugar, I was almost cured for two weeks more or less but then it came back strongly. This also goes with candida… Thats all, I’m very interested about if you took a candida treatment and if it went right (I also had the HPylori but I eliminated it). Bye 😀

The “holistic” and “natural remedy” people tend to blow up and exaggerate the candida thing. We all have it, but when it over-grows, it leads to serous but treatable medical conditions. At this point I believe Candida has 0% to do with cholinergic urticaria.
What did I do?
I took some powerful (and real) medicine which is used to treat candida (such as thrush, etc.). It is the same medicine given to women to also treat yeast infections, and it works well.
The pictures of my tongue were really zoomed in the back. My tongue actually looks normal aside from that. They said it was normal to have some candida on the tongue anyway. It is only a problem when it overgrows (and mine wasn’t a problem, it was in the normal range).
Anyway, I convinced them to give me some meds anyway just in case so I can rule it out, and it did make the stuff on my tongue get a little better (not much), but it did nothing at all for the hives.
So I have basically crossed off the candida thing from my list for good.
About the digestion thing: Probiotics help me with that majorly. I take digestive advantage so I can digest milk and other things. If I didn’t my stomach would kill me.
But other than that, it is doing fairly well lately too. I just have to eat mostly healthy, and take a probiotic when I eat junk.

Hey everybody.
A doctor found out that I have Candida Albica maybe you have it too?
Symptoms of candida albica:
• Skin irritation
• Neurodermatitis
• Intolerances
• Tiredness
And many more
Causes
• Antibiotics
• Stress
• And others
I read that many people here suffer from allergies and intolerances.
It would also make sense with the sweating. When we did sweat a lot after doing exercise – we are free from hives for some time.
The yeasts put poison in our system – the body wants to get rid of it.When we did sweat a lot he could be able to get rid of some..but then the Candida produce new poison…
Problem is: it is not easy to get rid of the yeasts…….
I am taking Ampho moronal now as pills . For the intestinal part they are not dangerous but I also shouldn’t eat any sugar and take pills to strengthen my immune system.
I am taking Ampho Moronal for 2 weeks now. I just improved a bit. It takes a while to get rid of the Candida right now I still have it a lot.
Bt it would make a lot of sense to me……
Maybe you should go to a doctor and get tested
What do you guys think?

Do you mean like a real doctor, or a homeopath doctor?
The reason I ask is because all the homeopath guys tend to blame every allergy/medical condition/hives, etc. on “candida.”
The truth of the matter is this: you can get candida in your body (thrush, yeast infections, etc.). However, this is easily treated with antifungals/anti yeast. I am talking real medicine too, (not just homeopath powders so many websites try to promote). I am not familiar with the medicine you mentioned. According to drugs.com, it says it isn’t marketed in the U.S.
I went through a phase where I thought perhaps I had candida from all the stuff I was reading online. I even had a little bit of white stuff on my tongue in the very back, which is candida (we all have it naturally, and if you don’t brush your tongue regularly, it can build up a little white layer).
So I talked a doc into giving me some Diflucan, which is a serious anti yeast drug they give people with Candida. Well, it did nothing whatsoever for my hives. In my opinion, Cholinergic Urticaria has nothing to do with Candida, at least in my case. Oh, and I just brushed my tongue when I brushed my teeth to get rid of the whiteness.
Also, I have read several times (both on this forum and other sites), where people also thought maybe Candida was to blame, and they tried all sorts of homeopath (anti candida) treatments. The results? They still had Cholinergic Urticaria, and a lot less money =).
So I am inclined to say it probably has nothing to do with Cholinergic Urticaria. But if it works for you, or if a real doctor told you this, then maybe you can try the real deal medicine and see if it helps.
Either way, good luck and I hope it helps you.

I think exactly the same as HivesGuy. I would have to be very sure that I have Candida (e.g. Test) before buying anything. Some years ago I was very convinced that I had it (after reading Internet symptoms/causes) and after a lot of effort (lots of tests and treatments) it was finally clear that I didn’t. This led to a lot of frustration, so be careful with these ‘cure all’ therapies, I’ve became very skeptical. Anyway, if there are any clinical proves then you may have it, that doesn’t mean it will cure your Cholinergic Urticaria, be aware of ‘health promises’ unleast there is a serious doctor. I don’t want to look like if I didn’t want you to cure, but the ‘Candida Albica’ don’t bring me good memories (like others: H Pylori, acupuncture, etc, etc) So take these ‘possibilities’ things with calm and don’t believe homeopaths / Internet gurus buying things unless you are prepared for losing time and money, also strength with the Cholinergic Urticaria. Now I-m already less affected by the uncertainty of knowing WHY Cholinergic Urticaria, I’m taking a diet treatment (Btw: HiveGuy’s one, I’m basically eating whole pasta or rice to reduce Visceral fat and it is working) knowing that probably it wont work, and more probably it wont work soon, So I am not trying to do things very quickly or desperately. So this is my tip, lot of luck with your UC!!
PD: Idem for the Tongue-problem-solution, hehe.

Can anyone please refer me to any dermatologist or allergist who is very familiar with this skin condition in the New York area? Finding this website has been a godsend. I don’t know very many people who also have Cholinergic Urticaria or are aware of it, if they suffer similar symptoms. So, it’s been nice to find a website that doesn’t just define it but is wholly dedicated to it.
Like many have said, it seems doctors and any kind of skin specialists never have a solution except to take antihistamines, which although they may help a little bit, they’re not really a solution and don’t prevent.
Previously, I did find that frequently working out or staying active helped the severity, but I’m now 9 months pregnant, and towards the beginning of my pregnancy, a workout almost sent me into anaphylaxis shock, which has completely steered me away from that tactic for the duration of my pregnancy.
My mother was a pharmacist and is now a nutritionist, went to school to become a chiropractor, and has attended an insane amount of health, body, medicine, supplement, etc. seminars. I’ve just recently asked her to help me with this problem.
Mine originally didn’t start until about 3 years ago and it tends to waver. I’ve discovered the connection that it’s much less severe or tends to subside when I’m eating healthy and taking care of myself (staying active, exercising).
What made a light come on when I found this article specifically is that for about a year now I’ve noticed a slight white film on my tongue and never thought to mention it to anyone. When I did mention it to my mom, she expressed that is normally a sign of Candida and I needed to cut out all sugars completely (including fruits and dairy) and take a probiotic (specifically ProSynbiotic from Standard Process).
I just started this process last week, and it’s exhausting, but I’ll try to remember to come back and update to let you know how it’s worked out. When this pregnancy is over, I also expect that to help lighten up my CU symptoms as well, and put me in a place where I’m more comfortable to start working out again and pushing myself to exposure, sweat and potentially help it that way too.
Thanks again! Such a great website find.
Hivesguy says
Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad you found the website, and that it has been a helpful resource to you. Hopefully your hives symptoms will get better after pregnancy. If not, then perhaps you can begin working with a doctor to try some of the treatments/remedies mentioned on this site.
I hope your pregnancy/birth goes well, and that you have a healthy and happy new baby.
God bless,

Hi Hives friends! I had no idea there were others and a whole website!! Im 34 and have had these since i was 6 or 7. Ive came up with every reason under the sun that could cause these. Recently my son who is 6 started getting them so i started thinking its diet related.i went to an allergist amd they told me im allergic tomy own sweat. So sweat is a secretion of all sorts of things from our bodies i notice when i eat sugar its worse the next day as if it could gwt worse. I usually break out 3 to 4 to 5 times per day. It can get rough and embarassing. I have spent so many uears of my life hiding who I am because of these damn hives. I almost started taking zyrtec today but decided just to read more. Maybe its sugar? I am not sure what i can eat that doea not have sugar. I drink almond milk but do eat dairy. So is un sweet almond milk good? So can i eat quinoa? I eat alot of white rice lately. I noticed that when i was a vegetarian and was very health conscious working out everyday barely eating bread and no milk my hives were very minimal. Im so glad that i found this site. I love pineapple strawberries and blueberries.
