Fish Oil Pills, Omega 3, 6, and Cholinergic Urticaria Hives
Post by: HiverNation on January 09, 2009, 08:41:08 PM
“The cure for hives is an awareness of the cause or trigger of hives, then you figure out a logical solution to the problem accordingly. As an example, hives from increased heat is a possible dry skin condition.
A teaspoon full of cod liver oil in the morning can help deliver moisturizing properties to the skin 30 minutes before breakfast and prevent heat hives. ”
Is this true? has anyone tried?

No, I haven’t tried that either.
It seems like I recall stumbling on several forums in the past on other sites where people were trying to do fish oil and cod liver oil and things like that from a health store to see if it helped, but I am pretty sure they said they still had it of course.
I do eat olive oil quite a bit, so if the oil theory is true, it seems like the oil from olives would have helped out as well. I tend not to trust a lot of that “cure” stuff online simply because it could either be someone trying to sell a product, or it could be someone who thought something worked but it was a placebo.
But I guess it is always worth a shot if you can find some at at local store for cheap and it seems safe for you to try. I have tried many things that haven’t worked. But I suspect the cod liver oil wouldn’t really have an impact on Cholinergic Urticaria.

Hi, I have/had Cholinergic Urticaria also. I’d like to share what seems to be working well for me and hopefully someone else can try it and see if it works for them as well.
first off : Me…..I’m a white, fair skinned, 25 year old male who started getting symptoms suddenly 2 years ago…no change in diet, no known allergies, no meds, high but typical stress levels, in pretty good physical shape. Within a month I went from normal to grinding my teeth in pain after having to make a sudden stop in traffic, or getting in a hot car, or attempting to work out.
What worked: fish oil pills, more specifically, the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA…. I just took what it said on the bottle (a little more at first I think). It helped a lot after about 2 weeks. After a few months I stopped with the pills but would go back on them for a month if I felt things starting up again, since at that point it would come back if I stopped for a few weeks. As of now, I haven’t taken a pill in 6 months and am symptom free 90% of the time, and when I do feel something, its just a little very short lived very mild itching with nothing visible happening on the skin.
So yeah, not an instant perfect miracle cure, but it is easy to get, cheap, healthy, and you’ll know in a month if it is going to have an effect or not, so it might be worth a shot.
seems worth a shot to me so i bought some fish oil pills
i will of course be logging my results in my ‘experiment’ post located in this same category on this forum

(hmm couldnt type documenting haha)
If I am not mistaken, I think the cod liver oil pills are supposed to have vitamin D in them. I am actually taking vitamin D3 supplements right now as an experiement. I posted this on the homepage on the blog.
I thought since I never get sun exposure it will be interesting to see if it helps. So far I can’t say that it is working, but it has only been a week and I will definitely keep everyone posted.
I think I do recall reading a post in another forum of somemone trying the fish oil pills and it didn’t work. But definitely let us know if it helps or not!

i dont know if its relevant but one thing i might point out is that i consume tons of milk and dairy and probably get enough vitamin D and still have hives, but i still might not get enough vitamin D,
on another note i wanted to recommend to you that you take a b12 pill, a fish oil pill, and go run a couple miles. actually the first thing that popped in to my head was you (hivesguy) and how i wanted to share this information with you. seriously there was alot of sweat it was almost comical but definately comforting.
i would say allow the pills a day to be in your system good, then take another pill of each, then go on a good run. try it!

Hey HiverNation,
Good point about Vit. D. Milk is supposed to have a lot in it, but I thought it would be worth a shot anyways. I feel slightly more energetic, but I don’t know if it is from the Vitamin D or not. So far the hives are the same.
That is AWESOME Work you are doing with you log! You have a lot of great info in there. I almost forgot about it because when a person goes back and edits a post, it doesn’t show up as “changed” in the forum like when someone replies to a thread. So I had not realized you had updated it. I will definitely make a note to keep up more now.
So do you think it is any one thing causing the sweat/no hives? Or do you think it is just a collective combination of the fish oil pills, vitamins, and running? It definitely sounds interesting.
What about the temp. where you live? Is it warm or cool right now? Thanks for the awesome updates!

hey sorry i havent updated the log in a while, ive just been lazy about it and had some other stuff going on in my life, like my girlfriend had surgery but shes fine. anyways:
the temp is cool right now where i live
things arent really going as good as id like with the hives because i had a horrible incident today where i went to the gym with a cold damp shirt on and ran and suffered very intensely
things were going fine before this though, no incidents at all really, and i was taking fish oil pill once a day…. but i stopped taking it and had a bad outbreak today
Now I really dont think that is evidence enough that the fish oil was the solution for me, becuase there are so many other factors that determine when and what time an outbreak might occour. It could easily be coincidence.
Also i have this underlying curiosity that chasing the pain will bring about a cure somehow
or if maybe just 5 10 or 20 more sessions of intense miserable painful suffering and my body will fix it self. i really am inclined to believe that, so i don’t know which direction to go. (meaning im not sure if i want to take medicine even if i knew the medicine would fix things, because i just believe that the body will fix it if i suffer enough)
anyways try going for a run with a cold damp shirt on, see if its hell for you. just do it out of science my friend and get back to me
run at least 2 miles without a break in this fashion 🙂

tbh I’ve been taking fish oil pills for months now without any effect (as a coincidence as I didn’t even know they were supposed to have an effect on my hives). They were also taken well in advance of my hives starting to flare up again.

Title: Omega 3 and 6 ratio for Cholinergic Urticaria
Post by: jga on July 30, 2009, 08:11:28 PM

I was reading the package of some coconut oil (rich in omega 3 EDIT: confusing packaging, it was saying their other product, hempseed oil, was rich in omega 3)) and the packaging/advertismenet said a lot of people are not getting enough omega 3’s but too much omega 6, which can cause skin disorders.
I’m wondering if heat hives is one of the skin disorders due to a bad omega 3 and 6 ratio. Fish Oil is another thing rich in omega 3 and I’ve read on some forums success with fish oil pills. what you guys think of this whole omega 3 and omega 6 ratio thing? has anyone tried supplementing their omega3’s yet.

Hello jga,
I too have heard some people suggest that the fish oil pills did somewhat help their hives. Unfortunately, no one has ever said it cured them. Even some on this forum have tried it (if I recall correctly) without a noticeable benefit. In fact someone even just tried the hempseed oil just a day or two ago.
I myself eat salmon at least 4 times per week for the past month or two (which is supposed to be high in Omegas), and I get nothing from it in terms of hives relief.
It is an interesting theory, and you can certainly test it out, but I don’t think it will eliminate the hives. I have often speculated myself that perhaps something could be wrong in our bodies when it comes to some kind of metabolic process. But then again, I really don’t know.

Title: I thought i was alone

hello from Malaysia ;D
now how do i start this, im 28 years old now, my history of Cholinergic Urticaria started in my early 20-ies. at first i thought that i was just an allergic reaction to sea food(i cannot eat prawns and crabs too much) but then the reaction comes even when i haven’t even had anything to eat.
the climate here is hot and humid all year long, plus the nature of our spicy food didn’t help. i smoke so sometimes after a ciggy my Cholinergic Urticaria breaks but at a minimal reaction.
making things worse i cant take those inhibitor cause my Cholinergic Urticaria will be become worse much more red and itchy. when i out go clubbing and drink it will eventually triggers. oh my.
my worse attack was a few months back when my client treated me with crabs i ate like hell and the attack (an hour after)was also like hell, Cholinergic Urticaria + allergic; i had difficulty breathing, the hives was really red and got VERY itchy and painful plus my heart was beating like i was on ecstasy; thank god i didnt got into an accident as i was riding my motorcycle home (feeling drowsy and cant focus), i straight went to the hospital and was warded, they administered a steroid based injection straight into my water drip vain. a couple of hours later i was cleared to go. NO MORE CRABS FOR ME.
I am into aggressive mountain biking and yes it does trigger when i sweat but now i take the DONT CARE APPROACH. not scratching it our even acknowledging that my Cholinergic Urticaria was triggered.(but i still have to answer the “oi whats wrong with you?” questions)
Im getting married next year i really hope my Cholinergic Urticaria doesnt trigger while the ceremony is going on.
i have been taking omega3 coz was recommended by my skin doctor whom i paid for only to have a chat with. he cant prescribe me with anything as taking zirtec etc will only make my Cholinergic Urticaria worse. what he told me when it strikes go wash my face and try to stay calm and relax. dont scratch it and try not to acknowledge it ( hence the DONT CARE APPROACH) The omega 3 helps in reducing the triggers or maybe it acted as a placebo which made emotional trigger lessen. nowadays i still have outbreaks but not as bad as last time (almost everyday).
i have been reading some with Cholinergic Urticaria are afraid to go exercise in fear of a breakout.
plz just go don’t let the fear contain you. just go out and do it. Cholinergic Urticaria outbreak? just ignore it it will fade away. (unless you the type chronic type one)
PS: for me personally im ok if it strike below neck level but when i goes to the face i feel down and very socially awkward. AND THANK GOD I AM NOT ALONE!!!

Hey Mousqy,
Thanks so much for taking the time to share that story. It was very interesting to read it.
I am glad you know you aren’t alone in your struggle, and that you have made it a point to not let Cholinergic Urticaria rule your life.
Thanks again for sharing, and welcome!
