Is Cholinergic Urticaria Genetic (Inherited)?
Post by: Klope62 on July 26, 2008, 02:27:23 PM
My dad lives in Louisiana (I’m in Georgia), and I talked to him for the first time in quite a while.
We were just talking about various things, and between it all, it came up. It being the heat, and hot weather. He asked me if I had allergies and what not because of it, I told him no, but I mentioned, while lacking details, that it does affect my skin.
He was kind of like, “oh no, don’t tell me you have that thing where it is itchy and you can’t sweat and what not”, and we just talked about it for awhile.
It was really surprising to him, probably a bit more than it was to me. Everything that we passed back from each other matched up. He told me about how he traveled around trying to figure what was up with it…and some other stuff about thyroid medicine (sorry I’m lacking in detail here), but I think the most important thing was the fact that he kind of said that it came (comes?) and went. He said it kept doing that throughout, but at years at a time.
Pretty fascinating in general, I think.

Thanks for the great post!
That was very interesting, and the first time I have ever seen or heard of other family members having it. So maybe there is a genetic link??
I know for sure that my mother has never broken out into these hives. The only thing she ever had was I remember her complaining about her legs would start itching her really bad sometimes after she got out of the shower-but nothing quite like Cholinergic Urticaria.
As far as my dad, well he & my mom divorced & I have never really had the chance to talk to him. But I am sure that if he had this condition while he was with my mom, she would have mentioned something. I also have 4 sisters & 1 brother (and my sisters have kids), and they don’t have this.
So Klope62 does your dad still have it?? Did it ever go away permanently? Or does he still get it?
Does anyone else on this forum have a relative that has this??
Thanks again for sharing the great info!

A lot of people in my family have allergy and do get hives that look like mines (for different reasons), but nobody has the heat/stress hives likes me, that I know of at least.

I didn’t ask directly, so it’s hard to say. I do not think he still gets it, or, it could be just apart of the weird cycle. He said that it came and went away at years at a time.
I also wonder if anyone else here has a relative with it or something similar. Genetics are funny though, you can carry a gene but never show it, you know? I can’t trace it back very far because my grandfather has already passed. Though, I guess I can ask my dad again one day, if he ever asked his father about it/if they had it.
I also found it interesting that he said he did different things with his diet. In his case, he removed sea food and other things throughout the years. He also said while he was in California for the time he was, there was only one more case of it ever recorded at the hospital that he went to. However, the guy stopped coming so they never exactly completed the research, or something like that.

Thanks for the follow up Klope62!
Well I think I speak for everyone when I say it is at least good to know that Cholingeric Urticaria probably won’t kill us prematurely! That is something I stressed about a lot at first, because I didn’t know anyone else with this condition, so I thought maybe I had some crazy cancer or I was dying or something. But it appears that isn’t the case since your dad is still alive, and other articles I have read don’t indicate anything like mortality being linked to it. It is also some relief it he did finally stop breaking out, that would be some really positive news.
You are right about genetics being strange. Things can be passed for generations without showing up. Then one day…BAM–someone can have a rare condition from a gene.
Also, I was googling about people that are related having Cholinergic Urticaria, and I found a post on a forum where a woman states that her & her daughter both have Cholinergic Urticaria. So this is another case of two related individuals having it.
So there definitely could be a genetic link in some way or another. The thing I am still trying to figure out is whether or not cholinergic urticaria is an actual disease, or if it is just a symptom of another underlying issue (allergy,hormones,etc.). I just hope one day we can figure out at least a definitive cause or info about it.

Yes. I hear you. A big breaking development would be wonderful.
I’m just waiting, in vain I’m sure, to see it pop up on Mystery Diagnosis or something like that.

hey guys!!, long time i haven’t posted anything :-[ due to many given projects in school. well summer at first was hell, but then when my pores have opened, sweat came out and it really felt great ;D. then the cold climate came :(, the symptoms came back( no more hives though only prickly needle sensations) and its bugging me again( i knew it was inevitable). then one night, my mom told me that my father is having the same symptoms that im having( when he start to heat up he get icthy needle sensations). At first i though i contaminated him( which i though was bizarre), but then he told these symptoms were common to him when he was teenager( on and off ). :'( then i realized that if he has it, then i must have taken it from him. Well my point is maybe Cholinergic Urticaria in inherited from our parents, grandparents or ancestors. :-

I’ve always thought about that, whether Cholinergic Urticaria was inherited or not. I can’t say that my parents have ever had Cholinergic Urticaria but I haven’t really discussed it with them regarding inheritability. Although I did recall my father saying something about being hot somethingsomething when he was a teenager but I might just be making that up.
I suggest that you delve deeper and ask your grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles on your fathers side, if possible. Ideally, we want to see a pattern pop up or something that reinforces the idea that Cholinergic Urticaria COULD be inherited.
Thanks for posting that!

My father and my mom divorced when I was young, and he moved away and never made an effort to contact me or anything (deadbeat), so I have no idea if he has ever had it. My mom has never had it, nor anyone in my family.
But it definitely is possible that it could be genetic in some way. Even if Cholinergic Urticaria is caused by an allergy, allergies are also genetic sometimes. So who knows. But it is interesting and I have seen several instances where the parent also had this at times. Anyone else have a relative with cholinergic urticaria?

My dad has told me that he used to suffer from itching of a similar nature for a couple of years but that they then disappeared. I don’t believe he was ever able to find out what it was that was causing it (so I can’t say whether he also has/had Cholinergic Urticaria).

That is interesting if you dad had this as well. It is starting to look like there may be some kind of a genetic link. My mom has never had this, although, I do remember for while that after she took a shower and got dressed she would always complain about her legs itching really bad. But it only occured after the shower and I don’t think it was caused by heat like Cholinergic Urticaria is. Plus she never says anything about it any more. But she definitely hasn’t had Cholinergic Urticaria.
As far as my dad goes, he and my mom got divorced when I was like 4-5 years old. I remember almost nothing about him, and he moved away and never made an effort to contact me. I grew up without any concept of a father. Sometimes I wish I could just talk to him to see if he ever had Cholinergic Urticaria, but then again, it probably wouldn’t be worth the trouble.

My parents know about my hives and what causes them and they’ve never mentioned any such thing. I’m the only one in my extended family going through this as far as I know. I could ask some of my family members when I get a chance, though.

I think its some sort of dormant feature that you inherit but is triggered by environmental factors.
Because my father had it after he migrated to the UK from a very hot country, and similarly I got Cholinergic Urticaria after i came back from a holiday in the same hot country

both my parents get hives from too much stress, getting worked up physically, so on. no one in my family has it as bad as i do, but they both still get them from hot showers. i do think there has to be some correlation.

My father told me he had it at about my age, but that it went away after about 6 months. I’m hoping it will do the same for me.
