Performing in the Arts with Cholinergic Urticaria
Post by: Klope62 on February 04, 2009, 11:31:43 PM
Haha, so this Saturday, I’m going to go to my first major audition. I’m not to sure what to expect, but I know once I get there in front of the producers, I will be extremely nervous. It’s going to be cold outside (which, there will be a lot of lining up, outside), so I will be dressed warmly. I know the hives are going to come, especially when I start the actual audition. I just wonder how I’m going to hold up while I feel the prickles. I think I can pull through though. Haha, I just hope it won’t be too much of a distraction for me.
I also believe they’re going to ask me a lot of personal questions, so you can believe I may just bring it up if the opportunity is opened.
It would be great to expose Cholinergic Urticaria to the general public.
Also, sorry for the sketchy details. I’m not like..legally bound to not discuss stuff (at least not yet), haha, but, I’m doing it for the sake of my nerves. I’ll post more, an update, and maybe some actual details after it’s all over.
Wish me luck though! ;o, 😀

Any chance of you mentioning what kind of audition you’re going for? (e.g. acting/music/dancing) – not the company specifically.
Try not to be TOO woried about it (saying and doing are two different thing, trust me I already know :p)
In come situations I find that the hives disappear much quicker than usual (e.g. after two minutes, rather than the usual 5-10 minutes or whatever time period that feels like an eternity) so just hope that it will indeed disappear quickly. Generally speaking after it’s happened I’m fine for most of the day afterwards so if it happens before you take up stage even better.
GOOD LUCK! :-*

Wow good luck on everything Klope! It sounds awesome & I hope everything works out well! Let us know more when you get the chance.
Don’t let the hives worry you. You can pull through it.

Thanks! 😀
I “practiced” in the shower last night under hot water. Haha.
It was interesting. I wonder how differently I will react in front of a group of people (who will most likely have reactions) though…but, I imagine I can pull through, yeah. Like, I could feel them in the shower, but actively dismiss them, though…as soon as it’s over I’m sure I’m going to vigorously scratch myself.
I..really don’t know though. Haha, I’m going for the experience and I’ll take it in however it goes. We’ll see soon, the date is narrowing in.

Title: I just played my first concert…

..it was at a fairly big venue, there was a lot of people, it was a little warm, and I was playing guitar for an extreme noisecore band (which is physically demanding because noisecore really requires you to play random stuff super fast like a maniac, in fact I played so fast that I bled and lost a lot of flesh on my hand). I thought the heat, nervousness, and strenuous playing would make me break out in hives but somehow I put on a good sweat. No hives at all. I also moshed later when a death metal/thrash band played after us (moshing = running around in circles and then shoving anyone that gets in your way, really really physical stuff).
I did take a Vitamin b12, E, and D pill and a zyrtec. I also had 2 bottles of beer and rubbed pure coconut oil all over my body earlier. I don’t know if any of those things contributed to the hives free night. So far I haven’t had hives. Maybe it’s the adrenaline? Come to think of it I’ve been in tons of mosh pits before for years and always put on a good sweat with no hives.

Thanks for the great info jga!
I am glad you were able to enjoy the concert hives-free, although the bleeding hand thing does sound painful :-.
I have noticed something similar to what you are describing, and I am not sure why it happens. In my experience, whenever we get really focused on something, or get really super active, it seems that sometimes we can bypass the hives & go into sweating (or at least not have hives).
I still have no idea why this happens. It has happened to me on a number of times in the past. Perhaps we do have the hives a bit, but our minds are so pre-occupied that we don’t notice them? Or perhaps something in our mind (like adrenaline or something) keeps the hives from coming during a rush of excitement & high activity. I have no idea, but it is perplexing to me.

I haven’t had a hive or itch for the past few days since the show, although I haven’t worked out in days (I’m still tired from the show and the mosh pit to even lift weights haha).
I’m going to look into adrenaline’s effect on sweating, I never had hives in really intense moments like mosh pits. I’m always pouring sweat like crazy in them.

“Epinephrine is a “fight or flight” hormone, and plays a central role in the short-term stress reaction. It is released from the adrenal glands when danger threatens or in an emergency, hence an Adrenaline rush. Such triggers may be threatening, exciting, or environmental stressor conditions such as high noise levels, or bright light and high ambient temperature ”
“Apocrine sweat glands
They are nestled in with the hair follicles in your scalp, underarms, and groin. These glands respond to the adrenaline that’s produced when people get nervous or scared, producing a sweat that contains fatty oils. This perspiration also reacts with the bacteria on the skin’s surface, generating a sour smell (a.k.a. the stink of fear, the stench of flop sweat). Apocrine sweat glands put the “odor” in B.O.”
wonder if high noise levels affects hives by triggering adrenaline which triggers sweat

It definitely seems possible. Perhaps the adrenaline forces out the sweat & bypasses the hives reaction in some way. Then, on times when we don’t have adrenaline, our bodies have hives when we go to sweat. So maybe this is an adrenal problem?

Used to happen to me while i played basketball! But now it just seems impossible to break a sweat at all!
Also, when i was skateboarding, i would skate until i got hives, cool down, then when i started up again i would just sweat! Really random, but all i know is that it doesnt happen like that anymore

So yea, what the title suggests, What type music / artists / songs do you play whenever you want to just realx and forget about daily issues in your life?, (Like Cholinergic Urticaria lol).
I personally go for Soul / Ballads, and sometimes ambient music with nature-like sounds.
Sade is one of my fav, artists, here… let me share this song with you:

Yeah, I pretty much like older music for the most part, and that’s generally what I listen to. Today’s music just doesn’t have that feeling or emotion in it (for the most part). There are a few songs here and there that come out now, but most just aren’t very good.
Far too much autotune, robotic/computer simulated voices and cheap mass-produced song writing.
I like a little bit of everything, as long as I can somehow relate with the song. I like songs written and performed with great emotion and feeling. I also like balads and love songs (for some reason, which my wife always pokes fun at me about).
I like stuff by Journey, Celine Dion, Peter Cetera/Chicago, the Temptations, a couple by Phil Collins, Jeremy Camp, Chris Tomlin, a couple by Fleetwood Mac, etc. etc.
Basically, as long as the person has good vocals, the lyrics convey a sense of deep feeling or emotion (and aren’t about how many girls a guy has slept with, how rich they are, etc), and isn’t immoral in it’s message, then I’ll listen to it.
