My experience with Cholinergic Urticaria (Cam)

June 1, 2016 by Forum Member

Well, for me, my hives didn’t start until early January. All I can remember is that during the Christmas break, I was trying on some senior clothes that I ordered for graduation, and I became really itchy when I tried it on. I didn’t pay it much attention, and I just thought that it was something in the fabric. However, these last three months have been nothing but hell.

Every time I step outside in the sun, I break out. I can’t even go for a walk without feeling like I’m being attacked by fire ants. I’ve recently tried Allegra, and it hasn’t been much help. However, it has taken some of the edge off of my hives. I’ve also ran across a YouTube video that suggest that Clarinex (Desloratadine) has completely helped them.

I’m basically out of options. I recently graduated from high school, and I’ve been looking for a job; however, I’m kinda worried about actually working due to the fact that I have this condition. Also, I’ve thought about Zantac and Allegra together, but I’m not sure if it’ll work. If anyone has any suggestions, please tell me. It’ll really help me at this point!

Let’s pray for a cure of this horrible disease. I honestly wouldn’t wish this on my worse enemy.

Thanks,

Cameron

Hi! I’m sorry to hear you’re dealing with this at a young age. I was in college when mine hit. Yours sounds passive (getting hit by the sun) while mine was more active (with sweat). It sounds like you’ll do very well in an office environment, especially the kind of job with limited outdoor exposure. 🙁 Keep testing different medication combinations. Allegra did absolutely NOTHING for me. Neither did hydroxyzine (I think it was called).

I remember back in February, every time I stepped outside in the sun, I would have to hurry and find shade otherwise I would break out and get hives from my shoulder down to my fingers. Now it’s still there I guess you can say. Now that it’s warmer outside, my body is starting to somewhat get use to it and i’ve noticed that I can withstand 80+ temperatures, and even my chest has started to sweat just a little bit. The only part of my body that can actually sweat is my armpits and that bugs me 🙁

Seek out a dermatologist for helping with medications. That is who diagnosed me and I am currently taking loratidine and ranitidine each day.

How is that combination working for you? I’ve thought about combining Zantac & Allegra together just to see if that combination works out for me

My son started CU at the beginning of this year also. He is 20 years old and in college. He is currently trying 2 Zyrtec tablets (generic brand) every morning. It does help take the edge off. He stopped martial arts because the sweat triggers an attack. We are going to try swimming next. Heat, humidity, and stress bring on attacks, but as long as he keeps cool (air conditioning is a plus!) he does not have an attack. Praying for you, Cameron! Yes, praying for a cure!!

Also, He took 2 Allegra tablets every morning for about a month, but it did not help him at all.

I’m sorry to hear that! Allegra takes the edge off just a little bit. It makes my body a little bit less reactive. Benadryl helps me about 20-30% however it knocks me out really fast and I can’t use it if I drive or going to hang out with friends. And thank you for praying! It’s really been tough for me, I’m just trying to find a loophole to this condition and hopefully find a way to be this!
