Cholinergic Urticaria or Heat Rash?

November 3, 2014 by Hivesguy

I’m 29 and have been dealing with a prickly hive type rash on my face, just wondering if this could be cholinergic urticaria or heat rash?

When I exercise / walk into a hot room / get over anxious, my face begins to flush and prickly red marks will begin to form on my face. No real itching or anything. As soon as I cool down, the red marks and prickly feeling will immediately subside and go away like nothing ever happened. I have been able to exercise through the rash attack and sweat normally though.

I did just recently move to Calgary (dry climate) from Victoria (humid climate), and never had this problem in Victoria. So I’m thinking this has to be directly related to the dry environment. I also deal with some mild acne, which has also gotten a bit worse living in Calgary.

I’ve experimented with different facial cleansers and moisturizers to help eliminate my dryish skin, and it has been helping with the overall intensity of the hives. My diet is also extremely clean and healthy as I don’t want to inflame my acne.

Any advice or insight on this would be great!

Thanks,

Anthony

    Hello Anthony,

Your symptoms sound like it could be cholinergic urticaria, but it’s always a good idea to get a diagnosis from a qualified doctor. Some flushing and prickling can occur with other disorders, such as rosacea. Not all people get intense itching with cholinergic urticaria, but many do. Too much niacin can also cause flushing.

Either way, I hope it clears up for you, and I’m glad it isn’t itching you too badly. If the flushing/prickling continues to bother you, an antihistamine may help prevent that, especially since you may only have a mild case (check with your doc first).
