Potential Cause of Urticaria: Antiperspirants?

July 31, 2015 by Forum Member

I have noticed many people in the forums suffering with cholinergic urticaria have claimed to be very athletic/ sporty. I was wondering if anyone would say they use antiperspirants quite heavily. I know I certainly did. I would use it all over my chest, arms, neck and sometimes even face. I perceived it would keep me cool and less sweaty in stressful situations at school. It did the opposite.

I have had this problem for half a year now a only just deduced the cause may be the antiperspirant use. Wherever I sprayed it the rash would appear. Maybe it blocked in too much sweat and clogged pores, or caused some sort of allergic reaction. However, for a week I stopped using antiperspirants entirely and gradually the rash has disappeared. I haven’t had an outbreak in a couple of weeks now, and even stopped taking antihistamines entirely.

I know this won’t help everyone, and there are definitely other causes, but please comment if this has worked for you, or you have had a similar experience.

Thanks,

Hopefully Helpful

    Hopefully helpful,

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with everyone! It’s always a great idea to experiment with the basics first (like examining diet and hygiene products). I’m glad that you’re doing better, and that deodorant may have been the culprit.

The use of under arm deodorants, anti sweat products can cause swear itching and cholinergic urticaria type symptoms. I have suffered myself over the last 14 years.
I stopped using all types of soaps, perfumes, deodorants etc. last year & i have felt
much better. I hope it can work for some others too… M. S. Uppal

I had a severe episode yesterday. I had recently had a severe allergic reaction possibly to pollen and felt like my throat was closing. Fortunately the severity decreased and since then I’ve benn congested and slightly wheezy. Yesterday, I began to have stomach pains and then the burning sensation, like a sunburn with itching. I turned red like a sunburn on face, upper torso and thighs, then broke out in hives. It only lasted about 5 minutes or so. I feel really anxious like I can’t breathe well and generally slightly itchy. One recent change is the addition of magnesium supplements.

I stopped all antiperspirants and deodorants for a couple of months but for me this had little or no effect
