Body Temperature Control and Cholinergic Urticaria Hives
Post by: BlueFish on September 07, 2010, 03:45:15 PM
I was diagnosed with Cholinergic Urticaria in 1987 or so. The last 10 years have been better – no major incidents. However, one thing that I have noticed over the years is that I can adjust my body temperature. For example, I can cup my hands around a temperature senor. After 5 minutes, the temperature reading stays at about 91.
Then, I replay in my mind the sensation I get just before a Cholinergic Urticaria incident, and I can raise the senors reading to about 97 in about 8 minutes. And then when I stop thinking about it, it drops down to 92 over 10 minutes. Is this a one-off, or can anyone else with Cholinergic Urticaria test this as well. It is repeatable, and best results are with full body heat – not hands. After lengthy research on Cholinergic Urticaria, I think there may be a connection.

Hey BlueFish,
Interesting post, and welcome to the forum!
So you have had this for nearly 23 years? Is that right? Wow.
You said in the last 10 years you haven’t had major incidents–just curious–do you mean no major attacks but you still deal with it daily, or what? Do you take meds, or just manage it yourself? I’m interested to hear because these longer cases always fascinate me. I feel like I will probably have it for a long period of time too.
About the body temperature sensing thing–that is interesting. I remember reading how some people can control their blood pressure and/or heart rate simply by thinking about it. So maybe we can control our temperature in a similar way.
I definitely think I could break out in hives at will. Even in a cold setting–if I focused really hard, I am sure I could develop hives quickly. I have never tested your idea, but it seems logical. I don’t think I can lower my temperature, but I am sure I could raise it by thinking about it. I don’t have a temperature gauge, or I would test it.

Hi
I can confirm that I am also the same.
I can raise my body temperature.
In fact, my hands are always extra warm/hot and get sweaty during an attack.
I can also cause an attack to happen at will (not that I want to but I can).

I have not. My temp is usually in the 99’s. Drinking cold water usually helps though since the heating problem is internal. Hope this helps!

It seems that around 62-65 degrees kept the hives under control pretty well when mine were severe. This isn’t always practical on hot days in the summer, but I was able to maintain it in the fall and winter months.

Title: Sudden Temperature change!?

Hi guys,
My first breakout happpened at night and the temperature was quite cold. During the day I was in heat allll day. But the hives went away for a few months. Recently I spent 3 weeks in a country where the temperature was veeeery cold and humid, when I came back to Southern California it was warm again, and thats when my hives became a daily occurance. I have a theory that it might be because out body got shocked my the temperature change.
Do any of you experience a big temperature change when the hives first appeared?

Hey Mike C,
Yes, no doubt Cholinergic Urticaria can burst out into needles when going from a shape temperature change (specifically from a very cold environment to a very hot one).
As far as different climates, this can happen even in tropical and cooler environments. Moving doesn’t necessarily cause or cure Cholinergic Urticaria, although it can definitely impact it sometimes.

My body temperature also increases massively during a reaction.
I can also raise my internal temperature (but don’t think I can lower it at will?)
