Can Skin Fungus Cause Cholinergic Urticaria?
Post by: mazefall on May 21, 2009, 03:03:55 PM
Like i mention in my last post about me having this fungi problem. my fungi went away 5 months ago after my dermatologist prescribed me anti fungal pills, but my itching hives still didn’t go away. Now i notice white rashes are on my chest, i realized that my fungi was not totally gone, maybe i have not taken enough pills or cream, maybe it is the reason why i still scratch myself to hell when its hot ( Zyrtec kinda cured my hives :), maybe it was spreading during winter time that didn’t notice, maybe it was clogging my pores from sweating, anyway i know the fungal is still spreading in my body( i realize that because my scalp is starting to itch like the rest of my body) is responsible for my itching hives from the fact that the fungal came before the Cholinergic Urticaria. Anyway, all of these might be possibilities, but I’m certain that if i eliminate all of those fungal out of my body, then my skin would breathe again, and sweat like it was suppose to. :-[

Hello Mazefall,
Thanks for the update. That is really strange about the rash you have. Since you did have a fungal infection in the past, it is always possible you got reinfected from clothing, or perhaps you never fully got over the infection.
You did say that the hives didn’t go away the first time you took the antifungals, so it seems to me that there is a small chance that they may not be related. It seems like perhaps the Cholinergic Urticaria should have showed some improvement while taking the meds. But you never know, it could always be behind the Cholinergic Urticaria, and then again, maybe they are just a coincident?
I have taken some anti-candida medication, and I didn’t see any type of improvement at all either. Hopefully we can figure this out soon. This Cholinergic Urticaria stuff drives me crazy. I still can’t believe I have been dealing with this for over 7 years on/off now. So was the fungus tinea versicolor? Sounds like it.

Hello Hivesguy,
thanks for the update, i went to the dermatologist today( waited for 1 and a half hour >:() to deal with this fungal thing in my body, i told my dermatologist that i had the fungal rash in my chest and back for the past years, and it is coming back, i told him that it may be related with my Cholinergic Urticaria, and he stated that it was an interesting point. so he prescribed an antifungal shampoo called ketoconazole ( official brand name is perrigo) which is for your scalp and can also be use all around your body :o. therefore, i will keep you guys updated if this fungal treatment really works on my Cholinergic Urticaria. ;D

hey guys, remember when i said that the fungus( tinea versicolor) is coming back and which i had to go to the demonologist to prescribe be an Anti-fungal Shampoo, i think it is working. Ok, why do i say that, its because i haven’t felt the needle ,itching sensation for the past week. the best thing of all is my body is my body sweats easily at every hour( gosh i love it ::)). I guess the reason why i didn’t have the hives but still had the needle sensation was that the fungus had spread all over my body, into my pores and before i sweat, i start to itch.
i guess that the anti-fungal shampoo really hope. i think my Cholinergic Urticaria is gone( i hope it is) since i have kill all of the fungal that was left in my skin. i have no doubt that if i keep up with the tinea versicolor treatment, it will officially be over, or over for good. i felt suspicious when i first had the yeast infection before the Cholinergic Urticaria arrived( i almost forgot, im starting to exercise with no breakouts or neither hives), so when it came back, i knew that the fungus had something to do with this, and that if i kill all the fungal that remained in my skin, i will be cured from the Cholinergic Urticaria.i will still keep you guys updated:D

Thanks for the awesome post mazefall, and I hope that it is indeed gone for good. I really appreciate you sharing your information, and also keeping us updated.
I was wondering, what was this fungus like? Did you have a visible rash? Did any of your family get it? I have read about Tinea Versicolor on the web before, as people also seem to get itchy when they get hot from this. However, when I looked at the rash pictures online (google image search), it didn’t look like anything I had at all.
Did you have those white-looking rashes?
Just curious because it would be great to know that this could potentially be a source for the Cholinergic Urticaria symptoms. Thanks again for all the info!

Thanks

To hivesguy:
you are absolutely correct hives guy, it is common that you will have these white rashes in your back, neck or chest, depending on your skin color, if you are pale then you will have brown rashes( being in the sun makes it more visible). none of my family never had this problem( they were even scare about those white things that were in my back). at first, i didn’t really cared about it, i though it was just a rash and that it will disappear, but the more i kept ignoring it, the more it was spreading throughout my body. maybe each person has similar but different cause of the Cholinergic Urticaria( i hope im wrong :-).
to MoshiMoshi
i had no fungal athelete’s foot infection whatsoever, the part of my body that wuz effected was my chest, back and neck. 😉

yesi was prescribed with an antifungal shampoo (Ketoconazole) 8), normally for treating dandruff and is also used to treat tines versicolor. Anti-fungal oral pills are not as effective than the shampoo. it normally takes about 3 months for your skin to regain its natural color :- Plus, the shampoo smells good ::)

since i have been dealing with Cholinergic Urticaria, odd remedies have come out of the woodwork from all friends and family members. something that my aunt suffers from is sort of similar to your fungal infection. she would get hives and a rash wherever pressure from clothing prevented her skin from breathing. her doctor recommended she use an over the counter cream that is used to treat yeast infections in women. she said it work wonders for her. i personally don’t have problems with fungus, but did try a candida cleanse with no results. if you have a visible rash and you think it could be fungus, give the yeast infection cream a shot. can’t hurt!

This is interesting, I often get athletes foot and as a teen I got tons of yeast infections and a few after my daughter was born. I still get athletes foot all the time. I get it in between the toes and have to dry under each and every toe, if I miss it one time or forget to I get it.

To MazeFall: Sorry for this long butt post! I had to get it all out
wow I just read over all your posts and I think we share the exact same two skin problems. I hope you read this so we can share what works what doesn’t.
To start off about a year ago I started noticing white patches/areas on my back, which by fall of last year spread to my sides and upper back to my stomach and shoulders and are now on my arm a bit. I’m pretty sure it is Tinea versicolor. I started treating it with Selsun Blue…(antifungal shampoo) as well as lamisil spray (tried the prescribed kind as well as the one you can just buy at the drugstore) using these two method have kept it under control, you can still see the white areas but It is not too bad. I also am very tanned and get regular uvb so that makes the white spots more noticeable.
However I do have the pins and needles! I sweat lots and exercise lots which keeps it under wraps BUT for about a month now I have been on the Ketoconozle Anti fungal pill to get rid 9of my Tinea Veriscolor cause I am sick of it!..in the last two weeks I have developed what I thought was exema but strongly think is Cholinergic Urticaria now! When I get out of a hot shower I get these hives, it has to be Cholinergic Urticaria….so what we have seems to be the same thing huh? I need to get rid of all this skin fungi and am cutting out all sugar, yeast, bread from my diet ASAP!
Tips I have:
to get rid of Tinea!…this is my routine..
1. 1 shower a day, wash with Selsun Blue (yellow cap) exfoliate with a clean brush every other day to get the dead skin off.
2. dry off immediately out of shower, buff with a clean towel. (always bleach towels, and change clothes and don’t re-wear them..fungi can live on cotton etc.)
3. Take my Antifungal Pill with a meal… ALWAYS plan to take it so you can work up a sweat about 2 hours after taking the pill. The pill will come out through the pores and evaporate the fungi!!!
4. Spray a topical antifungal as well once or twice a day to kill any fungi on the upper layer…..
Seems to be working…however the hives are now my new issue! 🙁

Hello misspeachy,
Thanks for the great info and welcome to the forum.
That is some great info you provided. I think it is strange that some people have the tinea infection and have cholinergic urticaria symptoms, and then others have Cholinergic Urticaria symptoms but no tinea. I am not sure if it is just a coincidence that they have both (tinea and Cholinergic Urticaria), or if the tinea causes Cholinergic Urticaria-like symptoms.
I know for sure that I don’t have tinea versicolor, as I dont have any discolored spots after tanning for the past few weeks.
I sure hope you keep it under control, and thanks so much for sharing that for those who do have it as well.

I have had Cholinergic Urticaria for about a year now…. I have had this website bookmarked and have always been checking back to see if anyone has made a breakthrough. Never got around to sharing my story and thoughts, maybe someday. But right now I just wanted to ask if anyone has tried using Lamisil on their skin? Lamisil is an antifungal medication.
A friend of mine showed me a breakout he gets on his back that looked very similar to what I get all over my body and told me whenever it comes up he uses Lamisil for about a week and it wont’ show up for almost months. I was wondering if anyone has tried Lamisil and what happened for them? Wondering if it’s worth trying…

Title: You can only fight pain with pain

Hey guys, its been a while now( a year i think 🙂 since i have not posted an update about my Cholinergic Urticaria. Well, Im here to tell you that I’m %100 hives free but still with a 60 percent itchiness ( before sweating). To summarize it all, I don’t get that needle sensation like i used too nor hives( man those awful memories, sign.. :'(). The only problem is I’m still itching( the kind of itch you can scratch and feel better afterwards). So, why has the intense itching needle sensation stopped you may ask?.
It was lack the of exercising. (year 2004) i’ve used to be a workaholic, like a energetic( no need for Red Bull) kind guys always trying to gain muscles, before all of this happened. i’ve became so lazy during the years after(2008), friends would ask me to join their basketball team, but, i was too dawm lazy(no Cholinergic Urticaria yet), my laziness kept me from exercising for a year. Then, bamm, Cholinergic Urticaria happen, hives everywhere( it first started when i was taking a hot shower).
I thought it was nothing, I kept convincing myself that it was going to go away. But it didn’t, its been three years, dermatologist didn’t have a clue, kept referring me antihistamines(benadryl), these pills made me drowsy and had no effect on the Hives. I suddenly lost hope, until i started reminiscing those times, when i was healthy and a workaholic( i loved those times). I told myself what if it was the lack of exercise. Next day i tried exercising(year 2010), gosh i felt like ripping my skin off(literally), but, finally after an intense 10 minute workout on the trendmill, Sweat happened. Gosh did that bring me relief. Sweat was everywhere, and it felt great i tell you. So each day i went to the gym, the first minutes where hell(if hell was even worst than this, than sign :'(), i kept pushing and crying, but pushing, i’ve sweated. the next few days, no signs of hives or the needle intense sensation.
This gave me hope, yes hope, that there was something i could do to put an end to this. It was pain for a short period then no pain at all, or having to be afraid of the pain and be it’s slave for life. its been a year and a half, now, I’m hives free, but with some slight itchiness which do not interfere any of my daily activities during the day, I’m 90 percent cured(something like that). Tell yourselves you can fight this, tell yourself that I OWN this body and Cholinergic Urticaria, i want you outta here!! >:(, believe me, it will go away. It may take some courage and hope because there is hope( from what i experienced). Start with a simple workout, let those pores breath. Don’t fear the heat, thats all I’m saying, because the heat isn’t your enemy, Cholinergic Urticaria is. You can fight pain by going through some pain, and never feel any of those HIVES and Itching sensations ever again.
Thank you Hivesguy so much for keeping this site alive.

Sorry Hivesguys and miss-peachy for the late response. What cured me was getting rid of the fungus first and then with some intense workouts to let the skin breath again from sweating, its painful, but is worth a try. If you have a fungus effection, then it must be removed immediately or else, any medicine or pills in the world wont cure you (this is for people who have a fungal infection and Cholinergic Urticaria).
Hivesguy- The symptoms did come back, however, the intense needle sensations went away, and the hives are gone, no sign of them. Only left is the slight itching. Again sorry for the late response.

And also, I mentioned in my old post about the fungus effection i used to have, it was the cause of the Cholinergic Urticaria because right after i was free from the fungus effection, Cholinergic Urticaria happened. The intense pain workout gave my skin the ability to breath again, which almost cured all of my symptoms. 😉

Thanks mazefal, you inspired me a lot. I`ve also had cholinergic urticaria for a year already and I almost hadn`t been doing any exercises in that time at all. I just tried it a couple times, whenever i had started doing some kind of exercise, usually after 2 minnutes my upper chest, neck and some other parts of my body had started getting redness and itching like hell so i just had to discontinue immediately and start running towards the shower… So i was really disappointed and after that i practically havn`t even tried to do any exercises at all. So as i mentioned you really inspired me and im gonna try doing exercises from tomorrow morning two times a day (at morning and evening as well).
By the way, i`d like to know if i should continue exercising when i start to break out? Or should i do a little break, wet myself with a cold water a bit and try to continue? By the way, it does also start to itch when i fluster as well and what is also a bit strange, that the spots above my elbows are always really red. Thanks for you suggestions in advance and i really hope that it won`t itch so much within more exercises couse the problem is i can`t get the sweat, couse it itches so hard that i really need to go to the shower.

To shypshnius:
Start doing warm ups, something that alleviates the body temperature, like pushups or sit-ups. You may want to start slowly. Also do NOT put cold water after the exercise, your body has to get used to the heat. Its best to be in a warm environment, to make the process of sweating faster.
Start each day, in the afternoon, take a hot shower before the exercise to open those pores up(which is crucial if you want less pain during the exercise). Do a 10 minute workout, and if there is no sweat , that is fine, you just want to pump up the body temperature and heart rate. Do the same process each day and the itching will slowly fade away. There will be time where you mind will trick you of giving up(because of the itchiness :-), it happens, just don’t give up.

You can stay as long as you want(your usual shower hours),HOWEVER, you do not to shower too long, because it may lead to dry skin, which is a NO NO when you want to treat the Cholinergic Urticaria. After your shower, put some lotion( no fragrance) to hydrate the skin with moisture, which will tremendously help your body to sweat. Most importantly, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! :o( of course, you body need water to sweat 8))

Oh my…. i can`t believe, i have just done my first exercise after 6months and i sweated!! darn i still can`t believe that, hadn`t seen sweat for a really long time. Mazefall, as you suggested, i had taken a hot shower + lotion before the exercise and i was able to sustain the itches because they hadn`t been that badly. However it took like 20 minutes to start sweating. I will keep exercising twice a day, after i get back from school and in the evening and will see if that method gonna work. 🙂

Hey guys, not been on here for a while but I am hoping your Cholinergic Urticaria isn’t effecting your lifes too much.
I pretty much gave up searching for answers for this condition and just pretty much accepted it is something I am going to have to live with. Loratadine was really helping me for a while but it seems to be losing its effectiveness.
Earlier today I was researching the condition and came across this website.
I’ve never come across this before but maybe some of you have (in which case, I apologise). But the bit I was particularly interested in was this:
‘Alternatively, there are some relatively common fungal colonizations (not necessarily infections, as these fungi can be present normally without doing any harm) that some say can produce itching in the period immediately before sweating. Sometimes these will also be accompanied by small areas of skin that do not tan as well as surrounding areas, which are called hypopigmented macules’
What do you think? Has anyone heard of this theory before?

Hey mazefell,
I also suffer from tinea versicolor and chronic urticaria. I have tried selsun blue with success but I never put it on my whole body just the visible spots. Maybe there is a greater connection to them? I had a patch on my neck recently and I noticed when I broke out with my hives my neck would be extra itchy and painful. I just recently treated it with selsun blue and it hasn’t been as itchy?! I’m going to start a full body selsun blue treatment and see what happens.
