Could Bacteria Infection Cause Cholinergic Urticaria? Post by: HivesGuy on June 18, 2008, 06:41:53 PM

Hello Everyone!
Well I was doing a google on cholinergic urticaria, and it brought up an interesting question someone asked on Yahoo Questions.
Here is a link to the person’s question below (but I will also summarize some of it just in case the link gets deleted): https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080107114514AAsGBOZ (https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080107114514AAsGBOZ)
Basically, this person went on Yahoo questions/answers & posted the following question:
“Why does my skin sting and itch when I get hot? About 3-5 minutes into running on the treadmill my skin starts to sting and itch really badly. It also happens when I’m overly dressed and walk up stairs or do anything that gets me hot. It is mostly on my back and upper arms. It usually only lasts a couple of minutes. This is something new to me, just started a month ago. No known new soaps or detergents. Please help!!” 5 months ago
Now to me it sounds like a lot of the syptoms we all have, right?? It sounds a lot like Cholinergic Urticaria symptoms.
Then several people replied with their “answer” of what could be causing it. I won’t give every answer people replied with because you can click the link above, but basically most of them were like “don’t wear tight clothes/drink more water, etc.”
But here is what caught my attention: The guy that originally asked the question about the “itchyness” followed up with a reply, and said the following:
“Had a doctor apt for something else. Doctor said it wasn’t heat rash. Some kind of antibacterial infection of folicles. Gave me an antibiotic. Nobody was right with their analysis of what was wrong. This answer however was the best researched however. ”
I found this somewhat interesting…He says the doctor said it was a bacterial infection of the folicles. So could there be some sort of infection/bacteria growth in our sweat glands??
What I find even more interesting is the fact that I have not had any type of anti-biotic since I have had cholinergic urticaria. I have not been sick with an infection in the last 7 years or so that would require anti-biotics. So if this is something caused by bacteria, it wouldn’t have been eliminated because I haven’t had anti-biotics since I had strep throat (about 7 months before I ever had my first Cholinergic Urticaria outbreak).
SO….any thoughts about this?? Can any of you remember taking any anti-biotics since having this???
Also, I was hoping to email this guy & follow up with him, but apparently he has it set where you can’t iM/Email him. So I have no clue how to contact him to ask if the anti-biotics helped him/cured the problem.

Yeah I wonder if bacteria is behind this. It is definitely an obstruction of sweat glands that is causing it, bacteria could be a possible culprit, same way it causes zits. I can’t remember the last time I took antibiotics, maybe when I was like 12, 5 years before I started to get the hives.

I wouldnt rule it out as some kind of bacterial infection. I’ve had an infection visible on my hand since a little bit after I noticed Cholinergic Urticaria. I broke my cuticles one day and the bacteria got in! It is less noticable now…. just like my Cholinergic Urticaria. I also think it might be something to do with my lungs, I get out of breath really easily, but I’m not overweight or anything like that.
When I first got Cholinergic Urticaria I thought I was allerigic to my own sweat. I found a lot of people who had suspected the same, loads of google results for “allergic to sweat”

Thanks for your replies. I wonder if perhaps this could be a build up of bacteria in our glands/folicles. I was doing some more research on Miliaria today (a condition where people get irritated/infected sweat glands). Apparently there are different types of “miliaria” conditions, with some people having red irritated bumps, and others having hardly any visible symptoms at all, but the stinging/itching feeling. And as some people have on the forum, sometimes small water-filled looking blisters that pop up.
Then I read that antibiotics are sometimes used to prevent/treat the miliaria condition. It said that in people with the clogged sweat glands, they tend to have as much as 3 times the bacteria on their skin that others have.
So…I wonder if antibiotics would have any effect on Cholinergic Urticaria?? Also, I remembered reading that a lot of times dermatologists will prescribe certain antibiotics to people with acne problems or back acne. So apparently it helps to destroy the bacteria that could be causing the excess pimples. So maybe if we have a bacterial problem, it could do away with it.
It seems somewhat logical that it could help in some situations, IF Cholinergic Urticaria is indeed being caused by a microscopic bacterial “blockage.” But that is what we don’t know. What is exactly causing it.
I have not had any antibiotics since I have dealt with this condition for the past 7 years or so.
I may just be doing some wishful thinking, and maybe antibiotics aren’t the answer, but it would be interesting to find out.
If only we could swallow a few pills & make the itching go away forever…
I am really interested in this, and if no one on the forum can confirm that they have tried antibiotics or had them since having hives, then I would be interested in finding out if this could be a possible treatment.

I recently went to an immunologist who said a parasite was causing it. He said the parasite was releasing toxins that was causing this allergic reactions. I’ll keep you guys updated on how I do.

I have been on some recently. Did not change anything for me.

Hello Torim,
Thanks for following up & letting me know about the antiobiotics not changing the Cholinergic Urticaria. It is a little disappointing, it would have been nice if we could take a few antibiotics & be done with this forever. I don’t know why, but for some reason I have been very sensitive & having more frequent breakouts. I was actually doing a bit better for a while, and I was even sweating when I got hot. But now I am back to normal. The only thing I can figure is that it could be related to the junk food I have been eating lately (snickers, peanut m&M’s, softdrinks, etc.
But thanks again for letting me know, so I guess I can scratch that one off the list.

Thanks for letting us know about your immunologist visit. I have read other boards where some people have suspected parasites, but then still had the hives after trying some remedies, etc. So good luck, & make sure to keep us posted if you find anything about it. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to share all of this information!
Thanks again & I hope everyone’s hives get better soonl

As I already posted in another thread, my heat hives were caused by an infection from a common skin bacteria. Check out this picture of bacterial biofilm which actually blocked my sweat pores. Crazy stuff, like little spidermans building their nets. Of course, you cannot see the biofilm with your bare eyes, you would need a microscope for that

Yikes! I can definitely see how that could cause some pore blockage! Yuck.
