Crazy Prescription of Antihistamines for Cholinergic Urticaria

March 16, 2017 by Forum Member

The dermatologist that I have been seeing has just prescribed me: Zyrtec, Allegra and Claritin. I was told to take Zyrtec 10mg and Claritin 10 mg twice a day and Allegra once a day.

The pharmacy was a little skeptical, as well as myself. My doctor said she has tried this with other patients and has seen success.

Has anyone heard of a medication schedule with this level of antihistamines?

Thanks,

Dave

    Hello, Dave.
I can’t recall if I’ve seen that exact combination, but several people through the years have reported taking different antihistamine combinations after being recommended to do so by their doctor. Some doctors will put patients on H1 and H2 antihistamine combinations, as well as other combination types. Some have even reported that the doctor has prescribed higher doses of certain antihistamines above what you can buy over the counter. I think they had to stop it eventually due to chest pain that the antihistamine caused (I think it was high doses of Allegra, if memory serves me right). There are always possible negative side effects with any medication, so that’s something you’ll want to monitor and report to your doctor if you decide to take the prescribed treatment.

    Hi all
Months after hearing many new cases here. Very unfortunate to have this. Dear all, in my experience
Anxiety be the cause for me
Anxiety is a hidden burden from our consciousness by brain.
I didn’t know that I have anxiety until it revealed through panic attacks along with this condition.
    My itching sessions would be
    1. After bath for 20 mins
    2.sweat inducing acts.

    My bad habits were

    Tobacco chew(led to digestive issues)
    Daily alcohol consumption

    Omitted bodily signs were
    1.morning body aches
    2.baldness
    3.urinating often
    4.fast breathe
    5.digestive issues

These were warnings to me, then I was unware of anxiety’s hidden role.

So I request you all to give up any neurotransmitters altering habits leading to anxiety.

I heard a story from here also. Then I started muscles relaxation and anxiety reduction with meds for anxiety. I have changed my diets to veg as said by Ben. Now my itching itensity have changed to tolerable and hope it will get better soon.

Kindly check for any anxiety signs, it might be the cause for you like me and some.

    Regs
    VASANTHAN

Thank you for making all of this information available. I have lived with this condition for years (decades) and never had a name for it. And I am apparently the only person in my family to ever have this kind of reaction to simply getting hot. I am a middle aged woman and have the inevitable, hellish hot flashes. A lot of them. My husband has noticed that I seem almost panicked at times over the probability of having hot flashes in a hot environment. The information provided here makes my situation easier to understand and explain. Thanks again!

I was put on a similar regimen by my allergist. I took 2 Zytec (10mg) twice a day. When that didn’t work, I was taking Allergra, Singulair, and Zantac twice a day. None of them worked for me. Now I am still taking Allegra and am taking Xolair shots. I had a bad reaction to the Xolair last month so at this point we are searching for my next avenue of treatment. Best of luck to you.
