Does Dairy (Milk) Allergy or Intolerance Affect Cholinergic Urticaria Hives?
Post by: HiveMom on July 29, 2009, 06:43:04 PM
Hi all,
I just thought I would share something that seems to be working for us. As I posted a few months ago, my daughter has suffered from hives on and off for years, winters being particularily difficult. Our story is very similar to most that I’ve seen posted.
She also suffers from acne, which the antihistimines seemed to help clear up. Unfortunately nothing works long term on either the hives or acne.
She as also been tested for allergies in the past with no concrete results.
After reading some of the recent discussions we tried eliminating certian foods. Our first attempt was dairy. After a week of cutting back on dairy she noticed the hives were not as intense and the acne seemed to be clearing a bit too. Then she went back to a regular diet for about a week, both the hives and acne got bad again. This week she started a total elimination of diary from her diet. This includes all processed foods that list any form of dairy in the ingredients – and there are a lot. Acne seems to be better, and even with a hot shower she couldn’t induce hives to show up.
Not sure if its the dairy, vitamin D or maybe something in processed foods, but things are looking up. Hopefully this is a permanent fix and not just something else that works for a few weeks and the hives come back. Maybe it will help others too.
By the way, when I was at our local co-op looking for dairy free substitutes the clerk said many people are sensitive to dairy – either the protien (it think its catine) or the sugar (lactose). Most people think of stomache issues, but he thought alot of people had skin problems too. Maybe antoher peice of the puzzle??

Hello Hivemom,
Thanks so much for the update and for sharing that information with us. I too have a dairy problem, and if I consume too much I can get sick.
I too have noticed that my hives can really intensify majorly if I consume to much dairy/junk food. As long as I limit the amount, it keeps my hives at a much lower intensity.
I have completely removed dairy from my diet before (along with gluten, etc.), and it never fully made the hives go away. However, they did get much less reactive.
So I am pleased to hear it helped your daughter. You may want to keep experimenting with her diet to see if anything else helps when it is removed. Who knows, maybe the hives will completely disappear? Good luck and thanks again. Also, you may want to check out my dairy free smoothie.

Dear Hivemom,
Yes, dairy could be a culprit, but not always and I have tried cutting back on many dairy things in the past with little or no positive effects on my 4+ year of Cholinergic Urticaria experience. Although you better get tested for a further list of allergies, but still Cholinergic Urticaria is more than a simple allergy, but then it is my personal view and does not have anything to do with professional medical advice or opinions.
Sometimes allergy testing methods are also wrong, so please watch out for this as well. You can just start cutting down on a list of items personally chosen by you and put them down on a piece of paper with what the results were when you did the cutting back.
Thanks and good luck
James

My [junk] intake has increased by something crazy like 800% ever since i got back into school. This is because thats all there is to eat. I think I’ll stay off the junk and see what happens

Title: Milk-Allergy or problems with opening up to people?

Hey guys,
Is there anybody who is suffering intolerances like lactose?
I observed that my milk intolerance started almost at the same time like the hives. maybe a metabolism problem is involved..
And in my case the chronic heat wives appeared in a situation with a lot of boyfriend-stress
and I found out that I really have problems with opening up to people.
Maybe there is a connection in keeping thoughts and feelings for oneself and the heat wives,
like the body wants to express something…
Just an idea I wanted to share đ
Any thoughts on this?

I had a lot of intolerances develop right around the time my Cholinergic Urticaria developed. I am completely lactose intolerant. I also have a lot of other food intolerance issues that upset my digestive system.
I don’t have a problem opening up to my wife. However, I don’t usually go into my private life or private emotions with other people (even my own mother). I am an introvert by nature. But I do express my feelings on everything to my wife.
I do think there is a possibility that we could be having metabolism issues, but we can’t know for sure if that is the cause at this point.

Yes, I’m lactose intolerant. And you wouldn’t guess it but I do have trouble opening up to people. Where? How so? Well, I hate saying negative things to people. I hate having ill feelings for another person, especially telling them so. My Uncle who works with energy says that I have this condition because I haven’t released my anger or sad emotions. I have instead buried them deep inside, yet they come out when I’m heated up or upset.
In fact he told me this:
“You know, there isn’t a medication available in the market that can solely make your face flush. It is possible to do so, but it would take a drug so extremely powerful to create the same chemical reaction in your face (turning red/blushing) that you do on your own. If they did create it, it would possibly kill you shortly after.”
That’s what he said. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I do know that it stayed in tack with my long term memory.

Hmm, interesting…
I am quite a shy person, when meeting new people… I love socializing but with people I only know.. it’s very hard for me to meet anyone new…
I am slightly positively towards things like milk, eggs and so on, the most it does is give me wind or stomach aches… but not too bad, nothing that would be seen as hypersensitive reactions… but could there be a link?
Looking at other Cholinergic Urticaria cases, mine aren’t so bad… I’ve read people getting it on their scalps, foreheads, arms, etc…
But I only get it on my torso, by my stomach and back… and if I don’t itch, theres about 40 or so small red dots on my stomach…
I get attacks daily, but they’re minor… but serious attacks (depending on enviroment) happen like 3 times a month max, but I do exercise every morning as this kinda decreases the intensity of attacks.
So, you guys who are completely lactose intolerant, is your case very bad? are your serious attacks more often than mine?
I’m left to only wonder if there’s a connection between this, but heh, it could be a coincidence.

Title: Milk???

Hi I have had this for a few years now and my parents heard from someone who also knew someone with Cholinergic Urticaria and he had it nearly cured by not drinking milk. I used to drink milk everyday but as soon as I cut drinking milk and anything dairy I immediately saw results and the itching stopped even when I was excersing or in heat.
However a few months passed and I was getting it again and I looked through my diet intently and tried stopped eating multi-vitamins that I had only recently started consuming and then coincidentally the itching was reduced (although not completely gone). So I am thinking that the diet has a lot to do with it, especially with my kind, and so I was wondering if my theory and experience with milk and then later multi-vitamins? has also been experienced with others?

Yes, I’ve also noticed that certain foods (ones I have an intolerance to), can certainly make Cholinergic Urticaria much worse. I have to avoid dairy, wheat, oats, and foods with lots of processing/ingredients in them. If I just start guzzling the milk and other foods, then my Cholinergic Urticaria goes through the roof.
I think its because it adds inflammatory (allergic) chemicals (such as IGE) in the body in excessive levels which makes the Cholinergic Urticaria worse (for me anyway).

I see….
What do you think of my multi-vitamin problem? Do you think its just a coincidence or is there anything in multi-vitamins that can also perhaps induce stronger waves??

I think anything that can cause an allergic response (whether it be food allergies or environmental allergies), can make Cholinergic Urticaria worse because it increases the number of inflammatory chemicals in the body.
If there is something in the supplement you are allergic to, then it is possible. You could always try switching brands or something like that if you suspect that there is something in it bothering you and making your hives worse.

Title: Does Dairy (Milk) Affect Cholinergic Urticaria Hives?

I’ve known that I’ve been very allergic to dairy products for a long time but I have always consumed dairy because I had gotten used to the effects.
A few weeks ago I thought maybe dairy could be the cause of my hives in some sort of delayed reaction triggered by heat. I decided to try and cut dairy out of my diet. But at the same time I also began drinking water. Previously I had maybe 1 glass of water per week and now I’m trying to have at least 2 glasses per day.
By doing this, I have felt more energetic but more importantly my hives have reduced in severity by tenfold. My job used to bring on full flown hives that would cover my body, but the last time I worked my skin had only red patches and small pink dots.
BUT.. I have only noticed this for about a week so it could be another factor such as reduced stress (parents have been away lately), or something else.
I’m going to try and confirm dairy as the culprit. I ate a bunch of yogurt and chocolate today to see if my hives are worse in the next few days. If my hives are worse I will COMPLETELY cut out dairy from my diet and hope my hives are suppressed for good.
EDIT:
I also took Omega-3, Vitamin D and a general supplement pill every day for a few weeks just over a month ago and then stopped. Maybe these have finally taken effect?

Yeah, it can take weeks to get vitamin levels back to normal sometimes (especially vitamin d). If you don’t get a lot of sun exposure, or if you are low on this, it may be a wise move to supplement regularly (see a doctor to confirm, and get dosage).
I don’t take fish oil capsules, but I do take vitamin D3 pretty much daily. I also take a multivitamin, which seems to have helped a bit as well (especially with my eye twitching, which was driving me mad).
Diet by far is the biggest thing that helped me.

I list all of my mental problems all day, but I am the most closed-off person you can imagine. I have major anxiety and paranoia. I also realized a few months ago that I’m very lactose intolerant.
