Hello. Would it be okay to double dose on antihistamines on a night (10 mg each)?
As a bit of context to my question, I take 10mg of cetirizine every night, but in all honesty, it barely works. Now later on in May I’m flying to Ukraine to watch the Champions League final, which is bound to trigger my cholinergic urticaria whilst at the game.
I was wondering if it would be okay to take 2 cetirizine tablets (20mg) on that night just to help me through the match so I can actually enjoy it. Or would it be harmful and worse than it is good?
Thanks,
– Mik

Hello, Mik. It’s very important that you talk to a doctor before adjusting dosages for medications, even if they are over the counter antihistamines. Some people have reported that their doctors okay’d them for a larger dose of certain types of antihistamines. Some people have also used two different types of antihistamines together (H1 and H2). Whether this is safe for you personally is something that your doctor would need to determine after evaluating your medical history, other medications you might be taking, and so forth. I hope you have a great time at the game!

Thank you very much!
I’ll be sure to keep that in mind and get in touch with my doctor.

Plus, pharmacists know at least as much and often more about prescription medicates as your doctor (but not, of course, all your medical problems and history) so they can often help a lot!!

Yes, please check with your doctor to make sure it’s okay. My son takes 2 Zyrtec (10 mg) most every day for his CU. His allergist told him he could take up to 3, but he’s never taken more than 2.

I like the newer Zyzal at night. It’s an OTC, also taking hydroxyzine, and ranitidine 2 x daily. My biggest help has been my accupunturist to be honest.
