Hashimotos Disease and Hives?

April 3, 2015 by Forum Member

Im going to keep this brief, and without going too much into my personal life. I have been searching for an answer to my hives for over 10 years. I have tried all the medicines (steroids, antidepressants, antihistamines), all the diets, all the blood tests. I also had dozens of doctors that could never pinpoint why I was getting hives, why I was tired, why I was feeling anxious… why any number of things were wrong with my body. Everyone was puzzled I was frustrated, but you name it, I had tried it.

Two months ago I found a new doctor that noticed my family history of thyroid disease… I have always regularly had my thyroid levels tested because of this, so I have known that I am within the clynical/normal levels. But because of my insistent complaints my about hives she sent me to an expert.

The endocrinologist that I saw decided ‘on a whim’ to put me on a low dose of thyroid replacement therapy. And I LOVE him for it. The worst episodes of my hives went away IMEDIATLEY. I still get one or two itchy bump every once in a while… but no more burning prickly needles when I get out of the shower, or walk my dog, or give a presentation at school. It has been confirmed with a simple thyroid antibody blood test that my hives did have a cause, and that they can be treated.

If you would like to read up more on the symptoms of Hashimotos below is a link to the Mayo clinics site, but please talk to your doctor if you think it may be the cause of your hives! It can be treated with medication, and helped with diet.

Good luck everyone!

    Shlee,
Thank you for taking the time to share that awesome story with everyone that reads this site! I’ve very happy for you that you’ve been feeling better with the new thyroid treatment. I hope your health continues to improve.

    Thanks again!

Yes, Shlee, I just tied this in to a previous poster this week along with other implications, such as leaky gut. Autoimmunity is the name of this attack. People need to insist on ALL 8-10 thyroid tests. Not just the standard TSH T4 T3 but the antibody tests TPO reuptake. Dr. David Clark has mastered the 24 causes of thyroid disease. Mentioned hives!

I totally agree! I got tested for a basic thyroid test in October 2014 and it came back fine, but when they tested by T3 and T4 i had elevated antithyroid antibodies (or something) and they need to test me once more before they put me on it – that is great that you have been treated! I hope it stays away
