How Long Have Your Hives Lasted?

May 12, 2015 by Forum Member

Hi everyone!

I’ve had cholinergic urticaria for years. As soon as it gets warm outside, I get hives on my face, neck, chest, back, arms & hands. I’m always sweating, especially on my face, back of my neck, and chest, so those seem to be the most severe hives.

I would like to know how long everyone’s hives last for. When I have a severe reaction, as I’ve been having for almost a week now, my hives will last for at least a week. I’m itchy the whole time.

A few weeks ago my cholinergic urticaria outbreak was so bad, and it wouldn’t go away, that I had to take prednisone to clear it up. I just started prednisone again today to help clear up this outbreak as well. I just started 150mg of zantac yesterday and will be starting desloratadine tomorrow.

I also just started hydroxyzine last week. The hydroxyzine works on itching. However, from the time a dose starts to wear off to the time the next dose kicks in, I can literally pull the hair out of my head. That’s how bad the itching is. Does anyone have any advice on controlling the itch? My cu is becoming very debilitating.

Thanks so much everyone! ♡

My hives only used to last for about 10-15 minutes. They’d usually clear up without a trace once the reaction stopped (usually no sign of hives after 5 minutes or so).
