I’ve found a way to cope with cholinergic urticaria

May 13, 2016 by Forum Member

I have had cholinergic urticaria for around 6 years now, and it got to a point where life was not worth living. However, now I’ve found something that works for me.

Every morning I take a hot bath (hot enough to make me break out). Even though I am breaking out, it is within the comfort of my own home. I can scratch and claw all I like without anyone seeing or knowing.

I sit in the bath trying to ignore the itch (extremely hard to do). Eventually, after around 10 minutes of extreme itching, it goes away. It’s like I have broke through a barrier. After doing this in the morning the majority of my day is itch free, and now I only itch when it’s extremely hot unlike before when even if I laughed I would uncontrollably itch.

I’m so happy that I have finally found something to ease my symptoms. Thanks for reading and good luck.

Ps is there anyone else from Scotland on this site ? I can’t be the only one.

Thanks,

Aaron

Sounds good. What are you doing to treat the underlying cause of your hives? Are you experimenting with any treatments?

I’ve tried everything under the sun, every pill, every diet and my best option with my dermatologist is steroids which I’m willing to take the chance on. I don’t see myself ever becoming CU free but at least now I can live a more normal life

I have been with this condition for 3 years now, and this last 3 months have been a nightmare for me. I quit my job because I was most of the time inside the bathroom and the bosses didn’t like it. Now, I feel like I will never gonna work again. My question is, how have you been able to work and confront the situations at work, or what kind of job do you do?

Hiya thanks for your reply. I was exactly the same. I have recent left school but have been working in an opticians for 2 and a half year. I was experiencing the same thing as you, constantly going to the bathroom to cool off. Ever since I started having a bath in the morning however and have a break out in the bath it seems to increase my heat tolerance level and it takes extremely heat to make me break out. You should give it a try, even a very hot shower enough to make you break out might do the same. Just try have one big breakout before you leave the house in the morning and Hopefully this will stop you breaking out throughout the day. Good luck !

    Did you try exercise?

Exercise was never possible until I started the bath treatment. I would try to run but would have to stop due to the itch but now as long as I have a bath and a breakout exercise is not a problem. Also this has lead me to believe that it is a problem with sweating. While I’m in the bath it’s opening up my sweat pores which allows them to stay open the rest of the day allowing me to sweat and not itch!

    Leen

Wow I actually have to agree with you there. I also take a hot bath and use a body scrub while in it and that has worked actually. Didn’t really notice because the itchiness would return at end of the day until I actually read that.

Guess I’m the only South African here.

    Thanks for the realisation

Yep,sounds about right. It doesn’t last the full day and as it gets later the itching will start to occur easier but having a bath in the morning usually leaves me itch free for the majority of the day but eventually it does stop working as it gets later on the day. So glad this treatment works for someone else and we are finally making progress with this horrible condition ! Thanks
