Life Span or Life Expectancy with Cholinergic Urticaria or Chronic Hives?

Title: Life Span or Life Expectancy with Cholinergic Urticaria or Chronic Hives? Post by: jga on June 30, 2008, 02:05:21 PM

has there ever been a study on the life span of a person with Cholinergic Urticaria? do people with Cholinergic Urticaria tend to have longer or shorter lifespans or is the condition not related to lifespan?

I always read Cholinergic Urticaria affects young adults, I rarely see any mention of really old people with Cholinergic Urticaria though.

Great Question JGA!
I myself have often though about it, and researched whether it will alter our life span (I think about death almost daily for some reason…I think because the Cholinergic Urticaria reminds me of my own mortality). According to one article I read, some people have had cholinergic urticaria for as long as 30 years or longer. I have never seen anything mentioned about reducing the life span. Also, there probably aren’t many studies because it seems that many people that have this eventually overcome it.
Also, you have to factor in that most articles suggest that people can just suddenly stop having the condition after about 7-10 years. The same article I read it stated the following:
In one series of 22 persons, the average duration was 7.5 years, with a range of 3-16 years, but, in 7 patients on follow-up study, some patients retained the tendency for 30 years.
So based on this, I would think it probably doesn’t have a major effect on life span-since if you got Cholinergic Urticaria at age 30, and kept it 30 years, that would put you at age 60 which isn’t that far off from an average life span of around 70-80ish (I think average lifespan for males is around 75 but I forget).
But especially if it clears up after a few years, then in that case I would say probably no effect for sure. I try to stay positive & think it will one day clear up, especially since I actually did have about a 2-3 year remission period with absolutely no outbreaks of Cholinergic Urticaria. Plus I am constantly trying new things to see if it changes Cholinergic Urticaria such as eliminating foods from my diet, etc.
Plus we still don’t know what is causing this. Is it allergy related? Autoimmune? Parasite? or what?? That is the big question. If it is merely an allergy, I would think that it probably doesn’t change life span. In fact, I have even read some research articles that suggests having allergies (not Cholinergic Urticaria, but the runny, itchy eyes/sneezing kind), could actually reduce risks of certain cancers by keeping your immune system a little more alert.
But that is all speculation. Who knows for sure. But I guess we will all find out in due time…
What do you all think???

I wouldn’t be surprised if it has some effect, but as later life sucks anyway I’m more concerned with the immediate problem.

interesting info, thanks! I wonder if people with Cholinergic Urticaria get any form of cancer in the future or if they have problems with their organs (since we all have a hard time sweating and lack of sweating I have read can damage/overheat organs).

Yeah, I agree it will be interesting to see if we do get any kind of cancer or other major problems. If we can’t find a cause/cure of it, we will all find out though in good time. But I guess we all have to die sometime. I would just prefer it be in my 90’s in my sleep instead of my 50’s/60’s from some crazy cancer/organ issue…
