Linguistic Validation, Urticaria Sufferers in Sydney, Australia

May 8, 2015 by Forum Member

Hello readers,

The following post came through the blog, and I wanted to publish it live, just in case anyone is interested in enquiring about it further. I just want to briefly say that I am not affiliated with this offer, nor have I verified any information contained within it. I’m publishing it “as is.” If anyone decides to participate, it is their responsibility to verify the legitimacy of the offer and to use caution and good judgment about what information they give out (such as financial information, etc.).

Finally, if any future research studies take place regarding cholinergic urticaria (or other hives types, for that matter), I’d certainly be happy to pass that along to the readers on this site. All researchers need to do is to simply submit the necessary credentials and information through the forum.

Thanks,

Hivesguy (website creator/editor)

Below is the post/offer:

Hello,

We have the following linguistic evaluation project for sufferers of urticaria. If anyone in Sydney, Australia, would like to take part, please write to info@spectrumtranslation.com.

Kind regards,
Brian Granger
——
LINGUISTIC VALIDATION PROJECT:
AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH
FOR PEOPLE WITH
CHRONIC SPONTANEOUS URTICARIA (HIVES)
LOCATION: SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
MAY 2015

This project involves another aspect of translation—called localization—which has to do with tailoring a translation and the language in it to a specific target country or area of the world. The original text is already in English, and now we need five native speakers of Australian English in Australia who can participate in the evaluation of it.

Project Requirements

All participants must have chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives). The project is 2500 words in length and pays $125 US (approx. 160 Australian dollars) to each person who participates. All participants must be at least 18 years old.
The interviews will be conducted in-person at a time and location which are convenient for those taking part in the project. The location could be a café, a library, a hotel lobby or the participant’s own home. There should be no telephone costs for the participants, as the interviewer will be calling them to set up the times and conduct the interviews.

The compensation for participation will be sent electronically by bank transfer or PayPal soon after the interviews for the project have all been completed.

Location

As our interviewer is located in Sydney, the preference is to have participants be located in that city or nearby to reduce the interviewer’s travel time.

The Interview

A subject will:
1. receive the questionnaire by e-mail, fax or post from the interviewer;
2. review the questionnaire in their own time, making note of any language which is unclear to them;
3. have an in-person interview of 60-90 minutes in length in which the interviewer will go over each question of the questionnaire, asking the subject to paraphrase the English (put it in his/her own words) to make sure that everything is properly understood. The subject can also provide comments about anything else he/she thinks would be difficult for someone in the Australia to understand.

Required Information

Anyone who is eligible should provide the following information:
Full name:
Age and date of birth:
Gender:
City of residence in Australia:
E-mail address:
Telephone number:
Best time to be contacted:
Years of formal education and what kind if beyond secondary school:
Preferred method of payment (PayPal or transfer in euros; if bank transfer, please provide the BIC/SWIFT code and the number of your account): [can be provide later]
Short description of your medical condition:

Payment information such as BIC and IBAN codes may also be provided once the interview has been completed (please e-mail any details: info@spectrumtranslation.com).

Any information provided for the purposes of the project will be treated confidentially. A subject may participate in up to three projects per year (for additional payment, of course); so if you would like to take part another time, let us know afterwards and your information will be kept on file for when another Australian English project should come up.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. Should you or anyone you know be interested, please feel free to contact us at the e-mail address below. We’ll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

DO YOU NEED RELIEF? Hi my name is Denise. I wrote on this website about 6months ago. My son has been suffering from CU for the last 4 years. In a nut shell we moved and it was almost instantly that my son developed CU. My son has a high allergic reaction to dust mite and his is an extreme case.

When my son developed CU it was so severe that he had to drop out of grade 11. My son went from being very outgoing, popular amongst his peers to developing CU in which he could not leave the house without breaking in hives causing a severe burning sensation when he had hot showers, any kind of emotion, spicy food and anxiety, due to this he had severe depression.

We had tried everything you can think of and nothing worked. Last year he was referred to a specialist at the hospital. The specialist gave him a script for CYPROHEPTADINE TABLETS and he was to take it one month before the winter month as that’s when it would start as it was seasonal.

April this year my son started taking the tablets. Within a few weeks he started to feel the normal start of the CU however he never broke out in hives, the burning sensation he once experienced diminished, we didn’t want to get too excited but started to get hopeful. Last week was the start of winter, every year without fail May would bring it all back and severe. I can now say without a doubt that the tablets has taken the edge off, he still gets slightly prickly feeling but it is bearable, he no longer has to drop everything and jump into a cold shower, the moods have improved. My son takes the tablets 3 times a day and most of the time remembers with my help when he doesn’t. These tablets are like gold, for what they have done to my son. I no longer feel helpless when watching him in agony, I no longer have anxiety on how far his depression is going to push him.

If your CU is severe I strongly advise you to go talk to your Dr and see if these tablets are for you.

I wish you all the luck Xx
