My Experience with Cholinergic Urticaria

October 18, 2015 by Forum Member

Hi everyone,

I’m a 30 year old female who has been diagnosed with Cholinergic Urticaria from my dermatologist about a year ago. I’ve suffered 3 severe episodes of these hives since I was 26 years old. At first, I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I did endless searches online describing my symptoms and was only left with more questions. It was only until I saw a new dermatologist that he told me this is what I have. He was really adamant and so sure that I have Cholinergic Urticaria even though I was quite skeptical. After looking up this condition online, I realised that he was right, and that’s when I found this site. I’m so thankful that there is a place for people who have been battling this to share stories and share what has worked for them.

My first episode had happened at a very stressful time in my husband’s and my life when I was 26. I had just lost both of my parents in-law and had just recovered from an illness. The second and third times had happened quite close together within a month, about two and a half years later. It was more severe than the first time so they had to administer epinephrine. The hives would move from one random place to another all over my whole body (anywhere there was skin). I was covered in itchy, burning, large red raised wheals for nearly 2 weeks each time. Every medicine I took did not work, so I just had to remain calm and wait for it to pass.

I must say, it was the most terrifying and painful thing I ever felt. Again, I’m very thankful to now be a part of an online community that gives more answers and resources than I’ve seen anywhere else.

I am sorry to hear you had three episodes. My first and only episode also came after a stressful time and lasted on and off for months. I now take Escitalopran under a doctors care. It is a drug that relaxes you. I don’t know if it did the trick or it just faded away. Ask your doctor about trying it under a prescription.

In my case it started when I was 22 (now I’m 26) when I started to improve after an eating disorder (nervous anorexia). I started feeling better with myself and gained weight but I also started with allergies and urticaria..
