Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Lactose Free Pizza

July 25, 2008 by Hivesguy

Well today my wife & I tried a gluten-free, dairy (milk) free pizza. As you probably know, a normal pizza would be loaded with gluten/wheat, milk (cheese), and all sorts of things. So if you can make a gluten free/milk free pizza, then you can make almost anything gluten/milk free!

Anyways, we made it using normal Hormel pepperonies, Gluten free pizza sauce (Great Value brand), Bob Red Mill Gluten free/milk free pizza crust mix, and vegan (soy & rice based) “cheese.”  We mixed everything up, and cooked it. Here is the final outcome below:

The dough was easy to work with–it did not stick to your fingers & hands as much as regular pizza dough. The only downside was that the artificial cheese was mostly soy based, which means it is harder for it to melt down. The rice based cheeses actually melts easier–so next time I make one I will probably try to buy the rice based cheese. The “cheese” was barely starting to melt when the pizza was done. By the way, most all of the ingrediets above can be purchased at your local supermarket. You may have to go to a health food store to find the vegan style cheeses (and possibly the gluten free crust mix). It all costs about the same as well.

So what did it taste like exactly? Well, have you ever had one of those “Chef Boyardee” home style pizza kits? It tasted a lot like that, but actually just a bit better! I think I liked it better because the dough was a little bit of a better consistency/taste. But it tasted a lot like the home-made Chef Boyardee style pizzas. It was definitely worth it, and it tamed my craving for pizza for a while!!

Update: You may want to check out my Gluten free, dairy free smoothie as well. I drink about 3 daily!

Looks good, doesn’t sound great. Haha.

Pleasure for you trying this gluten free diet though. I do not think I could do it. Haha.

    Hi,

I have been suffering with a condition very, very similar to yours for about 14 years now, with the past year and a half being particularly bad. My personal story mirrors you in an almost uncanny number of ways (multiple visits to doctors, dermatologists, alternative practitioners, allergists, nutritionists, etc. I have been “through the mill,” as they say and I have learned a great deal. In short, my condition became so problematically linked to food allergies that I had to limit my consumption to one or two items and build my way back up to a tolerable level.

I have found that my condition is directly connected to food allergies. However, the food allergies are caused by a number of factors, not the least of which is a problem of yeast overgrowth in my intestines. This problem is called “candida” and it effects a huge number of people worldwide. In it’s most advanced state, candida can literally bore holes in your intestines and cause the contents of your intestines to leak into your internal body cavity, causing many different problems. Candida is very hard to control, particularly if you like things are sweet, as I do.

I wish you well in your quest for wellness. Perhaps we should stay in touch.

    Best,

    Hello Curt,

Thanks so much for your comment. That was a very interesting point you made about food allergies. I agree that I think food allergies have a least a small role in the hives (or perhaps is the main cause).

I will soon start a very restrictive diet to see if it helps the CU. I will be cutting out most common food allergies, and also cut way down on my sugar.

I thought it was fascinating that you mentioned having strong cravings for sweets. I also tend to eat quite a lot of sugary foods (way more than I probably should). So maybe the sugar is aiding to a Candida overgrowth?

Anyways, thanks again for taking the time to comment. There are a lot of other people suffering with this as well.

I would like to invite you to join the forum if you ever want to, just go to cholinergicurticaria.net/forum. There you can register (quick & free), and post comments & connect with me & lots of other people dealing with cholinergic urticaria & heat hives.

I hope we can get some relief of this soon, and I hope your hives go away soon for good.

    Thanks again,
    Ben (HivesGuy)
