Should I be concerned about my symptoms?

June 18, 2018 by Forum Member

So I’ve had cholinergic urticaria for many years now, and it usually doesn’t bother me. But recently it seems like I’ve been experiencing it more frequently and more severely. A few weeks ago, I developed a total rash throughout my body while taking a hot shower. I also felt somewhat lightheaded, and I was wheezing a bit. Luckily I cooled down and nothing happened after that.

However, after that experience, I have cholinergic urticaria almost every day when I go outside since it’s summer, and I’m experiencing lightheadedness and wheezing almost every time. My doctors are aware that I have cholinergic urticaria, but I’m not sure what to do since my symptoms have been getting worse.

Are these symptoms concerning or do other people with CU also commonly experience this?

-Louis

Symptoms for cholinergic urticaria can increase or decrease over the years. The fact that you are experiencing wheezing and lightheadedness is something you definitely want to keep in check. You didn’t mention whether you were on any type of antihistamines or other treatment. My advice would be to explore your diet for a potential food allergy/intolerance issue in the long term, and antihistamines for the short term, if your doctor agrees that it would be safe for you. You might want to mention the wheezing to your doctor to see if they recommend an inhaler or something similar.

      Thanks for the response.

I’ve taken Claritin in the past as an antihistamine but it didn’t work and also I don’t have any food allergies that I know of but I have lots of allergies to tree pollen

Hi Louis. Thanks for posting. I’m in the same boat!! I’ve had UC for 8 years now and just this year it seems to have gotten worse. Minor activities, to taking hot showers, and boom, I’m covered in red. I take Allegra 2x/day as recommended from my allergist. It suppresses the itch but I don’t understand why it’s coming up more often now than previous years. Could it be the season? I live in NW where pollen is extreme this spring. Carry an EpiPen with you if you don’t already have one just in case! Best of luck and wish you well.
