Weight Loss (or Gain), Visceral Fat, Affect Cholinergic Urticaria?

Weight Loss/Gain, Visceral Fat, and Cholinergic Urticaria

Post by: Honkymagoo on April 23, 2009, 09:23:05 PM

Wasn’t sure exactly where to post this but this seemed the most appropriate.

Has anyone lost a good amount of weight since the UC started? I was big into exercise and lifting before it started and over the past 2 1/2 years or so I’ve gone from 6’0 185 lbs to 6’0 154 lbs. I try to work out when I can, though, I mainly stick to push ups, crunches and dips because they don’t put too much strain on my body. Anything involving weights generally sets me over the edge after a few reps, I bike when it’s not too warm out but I can’t do 15 miles like I used to and I’m not even going to think about trying to work out on my heavy bag.

I’m looking into the moisture wicking shirts along with my zyrtec to see if I can get through a workout without an outbreak.

No, my weight has been pretty steady, although I’ve gained a bit of stomach fat. I am about 6’0, 158 pounds. I too was majorly into pumping iron before the Cholinergic Urticaria got much worse. It is hard, but like you, I try to work out as best as I can on occasion & then back off once my body gets too hot & starts to sting.

When I get a house (hopefully this summer), I plan to eventually create a workout room. I will try to make it really humid in that room, and hopefully I will be able to sweat & get in awesome workouts.

Cholinergic Urticaria has negatively impacted my weight, as in i have gained. partly due to being prescribed hefty doses of prednisone (corticosteroid–bummer) to try and stop the hives, and also due to a reduced level of physical activity. before becoming a hive magnet i was much more active.

Haha, noo. Would be nice, though. I never was “active”, but I did try to work out every once in a while. Not like “every once in a while” benefited me or anything though LOL. Lately though I can’t even seem to break a sweat without getting hives on my face and neck, so I just stopped. When I take my cetrizine I’m free to do whatever.

So, to answer your question, I have not noticed any weightloss since my Cholinergic Urticaria started.

I was 168 lbs but now im 192 lbs..

I suspect its due to the vast muscle gain i had, because really the only exercises i could do were reps with dumbells and sit ups

Well, I guess it makes more sense for people to gain weight when they’re inactive but I have a good metabolism and lost weight from losing muscle mass. In the peak of my body building I was quite big. I’ve become pretty scrawny over the past couple years and it’s depressing to see all of my hard work flushed down the drain.

I still do small workouts to keep in shape but now I’m dealing with a worsening shoulder problem that I assume is related to all the sports I played as a kid. I had an MRI done recently and am expecting the results later this week. Hopefully I won’t need surgery so I can get back into lifting sooner.

Cholinergic Urticaria really has changed my life dramatically.

Title: Loratadine or Telfast fluid retention/weight gain?

Post by: jessamine1 on August 05, 2010, 02:10:22 PM

——————————————————————————–

Hi there,

I’ve been having cholinigeric urticaria symptoms for just over three weeks and at this stage it is still considered acute, not chronic. I have started taking loratadine, on my 5th day now. I have noticed the only relief it gives me is that when the hives are appearing I don’t feel any burning or itching….but it does not stop the reaction.

So another doctors visit later I have been prescribed Telfast 180. Hopefully this will work and I know some people on the board have said it has almost cured them.

My main question though is whether people have experienced weight gain or in particular fluid retention when taking loratadine or anti-histamines in general?

Thanks 🙂

Hey,

That is very interesting that you are now going to try the Telfast too. Please do update us and let us know your experience with it. I am very interested in trying this at some point in the future. I have read on several different articles that most people find this the most effective for hives type allergies.

As far as the weight gain thing—I can’t say that I have ever noticed that other antihistamines made me gain weight. I have taken Zyrtec, Claritin, Hydroxyzine, Benadryl, etc.

I have never noticed anything, nor have I ever really heard of it. If anyone else knows anything about this, please chime in and let us know.

I would say that cholinergic urticaria probably results in weight gain, only for the sole reason that it makes it VERY hard to exercise regularly. It is already hard enough to stay motivated to exercise regularly, but when you throw in the stabbing needle sensation, it is even worse.

Hello everyone!

I am new in this forum, but very glad to have found it!! Congratulations for the ones who created it!!

I have Cholinergic Urticaria since January 2010 and it has been pretty bad. I have tried loads of different medication, but nothing really helps, except for hydrocortisone. I am currently on Telfast 120 (1 per day) and it does nothing at all. In fact I have already another appointment in September to change the medication.

My doctor was hopping that this was the one drug I have been desperately trying to find. Unfortunately it isn’t. Maybe it will work for some of you.

Best of luck. 😉

I have gained weight as the gym is not somewhere I want to be with this. I actually just bought a PS3 Move workout game so that I get some exercise and can be uncomfortable in my own home as opposed to a public setting.

Your dosage may be too low, one a day does nothing for me. Talk to your doctor about maybe trying 2 fexofenadine and a zyrtec. this is what im on but it doesn’t work when i do exercise or long walks.

Just make sure to talk to a doctor first before you try a combo like this to make sure it will be safe for you.

I lost muscle tone. 🙁

I’m still afraid of exercising. The last time I was at a gym exercising, I broke out so bad and had to walk to where it felt like a mile away to the school health center across campus from the fitness center. I got weird stares. I wasn’t sure if it was from the hives all over my body or the crazy itchy dance I was doing? Hmm…still not sure. 😛

So I’m kinda out of shape. Gained a few pounds but no more than five at the most. I used to be super fit. One hot and tanned I might add college chicka! Being Mexican and Japanese, I’m very short so losing tone makes me look kinda over weight. I am a size 4 so I still feel okay. But I guess you can say I’m um…well kinda on the yellowish side and kinda squishy. Wow, I feel like I just described myself like a Twinkie!

No No No!

I do not look like a twinkie. Just an average girl. Smiley and fun…but wishes and prays to have fun in the sun! 8)

Due to Cholinergic Urticaria I had to give up alcohol altogether. It also knocked me out the gym which is where I spent quite a bit of time. I’ve since given up a 28″ waist for some 60lbs. Not exactly the trade I would have wanted to make but much like mozart stated, I’m terrified of doing anything to intentionally induce a flair up.

Title: Visceral Fat, Hivesguy’s Story and Mine

Post by: Steelers17 on July 03, 2011, 07:47:47 AM

——————————————————————————–

Beginning with a little introduction, I have had hives for almost 3 years. Before the onset of cholinergic urticaria I was a star athlete in baseball and also played basketball. Around this time I was 12 and I skipped two grades from sixth to eighth grade. Life was almost perfect around that time but once I graduated I decided to take the summer off. Two baseball teams and a basketball team made my back hurt. On top of that there is no baseball in the summer because of the heat of Arizona.

This period of inactivity was when I first got the hives. I can’t remember exactly when it happened but I know it was around this time. In Hivesguy’s story he also got hives when he stopped activity. From researching, this seems to be the case for more than a couple of people. That isn’t the real similarity between his story and mine though.

I have always been sort of big for my age. I was never fat but I was sort of tall and heavy in a muscular way. I was over 150 and only 5 ft 8 or so. Of course I was only 12 at this point too. Okay here comes the real similarities involving fat (visceral fat probably as well). Thinking about his story and mine I can think about my situation as a timeline pretty easily.

Like him I got the hives when I stopped exercising. Even though we both stopped exercising we kept eating the same way. He ate fast food and junk which I did not do. I am a vegetarian but I ate lots of calories and cheesy dishes such as pizza and ziti. So basically, we both continued eating high calories without exercising thus gaining weight. Now, you could say I am growing because I am young so gaining weight is normal but the weight I was gaining with zero exercise was unhealthy.

When I first got it, it was bad don’t get me wrong. However, I was able to power through it in some cases and did sort of well with it. I wasn’t losing my mind in short terms, but it was bad enough to prevent me from going outside. This is similar to Hivesguy’s story. When he first got it he would consider it to be a 4 or 5 out of 10 on a scale of severity. That is about what I would have given it. However, in the summer of 2010 Hivesguy’s hives got considerably worse going up to say a 9 on the scale of 1-10. This is when he started to get a terrible rash which he posted pictures of. Some people get this and some don’t. Bottom line is that recently I have started to get the rash as well and my hives have also gone up to almost unbearable, say a 9 out of 10 on the scale.

To sum my somewhat sloppy point up

1. We both got hives after stopping exercise.

2. We both continued to eat the same way.

3. To begin with there were no visible hives and it was somewhat tolerable.

4. This changed upon gaining weight and a physical rash began. (we both gained about 10 pounds)

I was 155 or a little less when I first got the condition. I went up to 159-160 and I was good (about the same as 155). I then went up to 164. I was slightly worse but there was no rash. Recently I went up to 170 and I have the rash and life is horrible. To throw some more coincidence out there it is the summer when I am getting worse and our weight gain is almost identical.

These coincidences are very coincidental, aren’t they? Anyway, I would really like to hear Hivesguy’s comments as well as anyone else with anything interesting to comment about or add. I am going to go on a super health kick with much less calories (1500ish). Oh, I also did my exercising bike for short increments because I was too pathetic to do more than a few minutes (before I even read your articles lol). I built up to 7-10 though. I will do both of these and go back to a much lower weight. I have always been really good at losing or gaining weight basically at will. I don’t know if this will cure me. I am not expecting it to but I am pretty sure this will at least take me back to the way I was before. One more thing I want to add is that I have tried all of the standard treatments and even some of the different or strange ideas. Who hasn’t with this condition?

My name is Kyrie by the way.

Hey Kyrie,

Cool name by the way. Your story does sound a lot like mine, and there are indeed many posts on this forum where people have mentioned how their hives came on when they stopped playing sports, or how their hives came on and they are overweight, etc. So it is pretty interesting how all of this seemed to play out in a very similar way to how it happened to me (and apparently many others).

I think that since you are being proactive, you stand a pretty good chance of getting your hives under control, and possibly even reducing symptoms 100%. But I cannot make any guarantees, because it is always possible people have Cholinergic Urticaria for different reasons.

I hope everything works out well for you. It is a slow process doing anything (diet, exercise, etc.), and results certainly don’t happen fast. It took me almost a month or so. But I am doing it healthy, and that’s whats important.

To sum it up, I think anyone with Cholinergic Urticaria will do well to remove any and all inflammation sources in their bodies. This includes:

—Visceral fat–which is shown to release/increase inflammatory chemicals. Exercise does help remove this, and also promotes overall health. People with severe Cholinergic Urticaria, or anaphylaxis should obviously use extreme caution, and may not be able to do this.

—Food Intolerances & allergies–which are known to cause allergic/inflammatory responses. Food allergies typically have immediate symptoms (immediate hives, rash, etc.), whereas intolerances are very hard to pinpoint, and can be delayed, and usually don’t go away for up to 3 weeks when the food is gone. They also don’t tend to show up on food allergy tests. In food intolerances, symptoms are more vague (upset stomach, headaches, canker sores in mouth, very light rashes, exscessively dry skin), etc. Delayed-onset food intolerances affect a large majority of people I think.

—External allergies- Such as dust mites, environmental allergies, etc.

I still think what is working for me is the regular exercise, losing weight (which I am almost done doing), and (without a doubt), removing foods that cause delayed onset symptoms. This is milk/dairy (causes severe stomach pain), wheat/oats (causes rashes to develop on my hands), and so forth.

Thanks for the post and welcome!

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t get to see it until today but thanks for the response. It is so strange how many people seem to have this for a different reason. Doctors really know ZERO about this though. I am sure that you (myself) and everyone on this forum knows more about it than most doctors.

The whole allergies deal is interesting. I got tested for allergies a while back and didn’t have any food allergies. I had 8/100 environmental allergies. Most of these were trees and what not but also cats. I have had cats my whole life and am not allergic in any real way. Maybe this has to do with that whole IgE (allergies add to my IgE level) treatment for hives going on in clinical trials.

I am hoping between a couple different ideas that I will be cured in the next year or so for sure. I need to get back on sports and back into life. Luckily I am still young so everything isn’t ruined and I will be graduating high school in a couple months as well. Thanks again for the reply and I am glad you think that I can get better. I am positive that I will improve soon.

Hey Kyrie,

Interesting read I just want to say I also had a similar experience. I went through a period of inactivity followed by hives. I also started off with no visible signs, no hives, just an insane itch, prickles, and a red rash which appeared from where ever I scratched. 4 years later they turned into full blown visible hives. Now I’m struggling to get them under control. Good luck and all the best.

I avoided activating flare ups for a long time and then had 3 kids, so I’m overweight. With the xyzal I’m on now I should be fine to work out but I have a 15 month old and don’t get a lot of sleep in general (not because of her…I’m just a night owl). So I don’t have a lot of energy to get up and go.
