Hello everyone,
I have this condition chronic cold hives. I’ve had it for about two years now, and I get hives when I’m in cold weather. When the temperature is below 55 degrees F, or when I’m swimming in cold water, my skin breaks out in hives.
It really isn’t a major condition; however, it does bother me because I can never be outside in the cold. Even swimming in pools makes my skin break out.
Whenever I do get hives, they hardly itch if at all, and to control them, I take Zyrtec. I do not need it, so I can go without it if I have to, but I take it anyway to control my symptoms. I can eat cold foods, and drink cold drinks just fine and without any issue.
I have heard of cases of Chronic Hives going away eventually, within 5-10 years or so, and typically in someone’s 20’s.
So, I was just wondering weather my case of hives will go away eventually, for good? In case this matters, I’m 15 years old.
Thanks,
Dan G.

Hi Dan,
I also have cold hives. I developed them 3 years ago, then 2 years ago got cholinergic urticaria also.. so hot and cold hives. I take ranitidine and loratidine twice a day and that keeps things controlled for me. I am 50, sorry this doesn’t really answer the question you asked, but not many people come on here with cold hives so wanted to let you know you aren’t alone and what works for me. Ann

Hey Dan, I was diagnosed at seven with cold utiricaria. I am now 24. My doctor told me I’d grow out of it in 5-7 years. Clearly that isn’t the case. I’ve been managing it for 17 years. And within the last couple years it’s actually gotten worse. My triggers have increased. If the air conditioning is set too low, if I sit on a cold chair etc. so I also try and take a Zyrtec daily to help ease the hives. I’ve never researched if diets play a part in the cold hives. Stay warm out there!
