Could Antibiotics Cause Cholinergic Urticaria?
Post by: mazefall on August 30, 2008, 05:10:30 PM
Before I had Cholinergic Urticaria, i was given antibiotics from my dentist because i had gum disease. This was my first antibiotic that i ever had, and i remember it was during the winter season, so maybe i had it but never knew it because of the cold season( heat triggers the symptoms).
I basically think its due to the antibiotics, because I’m usually a anti pill person so i rejected every med the doctor was offering me, but due to the gum disease, i had to take the pills. my question is does anyone took antibiotics before the Cholinergic Urticaria arrived? ???

Great question!
Yes, I had antibiotics about 4-5 months before I first noticed Cholinergic Urticaria. So maybe there is a link. Maybe the antibiotics did something??
Anyone else take a round of antibiotics within a few weeks/months before the first time you developed Cholinergic Urticaria? Or has anyone got Cholinergic Urticaria that has never had antibiotics?

I’ve never been on any.
I’m also anti-pill though too. Haha, I’ve never had a situation, yet anyway, where I’ve really needed them.

I was 21 when I first had Cholinergic Urticaria. I hadn’t had anti-biotics for over a year before that.
But.. I’m not going to discredit this just yet, because I did have A LOT of anti-biotics when I was a kid – maybe the effects were long-lasting.

I had a large amount of antibiotics about 12 months before my Cholinergic Urticaria started!? Has anyone on here used antibiotics whilst theyve had Cholinergic Urticaria? Does it make it worse whilst you are taking them?
Also… Slightly off topic. But I was just wondering how many people on here get Cholinergic Urticaria worse in the winter than the summer?
Because its summer now and i havent had Cholinergic Urticaria badly in like 2 months, but with winter getting closer and closer, im beginning to get a little worried!

for me basically both season ( winter or summer) :- are the ones that i worry most. well in winter, the symptoms don’t come that often because it is hard to break a single sweat, but however, the prickly needle sensation will become more intense, and painful each time you are nervous, embarrassed without the need of physical activities. In summer, most people i know who acquired Cholinergic Urticaria prefer this season best because its easier to sweat due to the humidity and heat, but it trouble me because the beginning of summer, the pores expand very often( even while sleeping, which trouble some people >:(), so once you break a good sweat, you are good to go for another 2 days without any symptoms.
well, about the antibiotic, i stop taken them because they somehow make the condition worse because due to severe side effects. remember to replace the good bacteria that were killed by the antibiotic. probiotic such as yogurt can help with that. Talk to your doc before stopping any med. 😉

This is my first year with Cholinergic Urticaria. Cholinergic Urticaria started last Christmas and was really bad, got better in the Summer, and is now getting worse… we shall see.

The Cholinergic Urticaria is definitely more intense during winter for me (usually). The reason is because it gets super cold (so my body gets used to it). But then I can walk in a building somewhere or the grocery store, and they have the heat blasted.
It is quite a shock to my body trying to adjust to such an extreme temperature change! So it is more intense. Usually, summer isn’t so bad, but this summer wasn’t very good since I broke out a lot. I am definitely looking forward to fall time.
Anyway, some people have speculated both ways. Some have suggested antibiotics caused their hives, while some have suggested it helped (because they suspected a bacteria blocking the pores).

I wonder about antiobiotics too! Ten days ago I was prescribed antibiotics for a blocked parotid gland in my face (salivary gland). This was extremely painful and caused my face to swell. The doctor gave me a course of 10 days of antiobiotics and it helped a lot, the gland is back to normal. But then, on my last day of taking the antibiotic, I got on the treadmill and noticed within a half hour my legs covered in small red dots! Which then spread to my lower legs, arms, and chest. I stopped the treadmill workout and suffered with blotchy itching the rest of the day. Overnight, the rash/hives dissipated but were still present on my upper thighs. The next day, thinking I was perhaps allergic to something I ate, I went hiking for an hour and a half, and ran about 10 minutes of it. When I finished I was covered in red, itchy splotches. I’m on Zyrtec anyway due to allergies, and started taking Benadryl, but nothing is happening to fix this problem! So I too wonder about the antiobiotics and if this had anything to do with this. This is my first time dealing with this (and right around the holidays no less), I have no idea what to do!

Hello Sickofhives, and welcome to the forum!
I am sorry about the hives attack you experienced. You may want to go see your doctor if it doesn’t resolve soon just to make sure that it isn’t some kind of bad reaction to the meds you were given.
Antibiotics can seem to give people strange rashes and flushing if they have an allergy to them, or if they eat certain foods with them, so I would definitely be cautious anytime you take any.
I don’t know for sure that this is caused by antibiotics, but it is always possible. Perhaps they destroy all of the bacteria on our skin and allow some yeast to take over that clogs our sweat pores. Who knows? However, some people did develop this without any antibiotic treatments, so it may not be the only cause if it is linked to Cholinergic Urticaria in any way.
Hopefully time will tell and we will figure out the mysteries of this crazy condition.

In the past I have often wondered if maybe this isn’t being caused by some kind of unknown or unseen fungus/yeast that is building up and blocking our sweat pores and messing with our immune system in the process. But then again, it may have nothing to do with it, especially since you developed this while on anti-fungals.

I met a girl last night with the same visible symptoms as myself. So I asked her about it, and she told me it was a side effect of the Morphine she was taking for a Kidney problem. Weird.

Yes, I have also heard that morphine makes people get all itchy too. However, I think it is the actual chemical causing a histamine release. I don’t think it is triggered by heat/sweating like Cholinergic Urticaria is. But they get really flushed and itchy, so I would think they probably feel a similar sensation to what we feel. That is pretty interesting.

I wasn’t on anything at all. Though this could be an issue that is different for everyone. Which means the cure may be different for everyone. Man, I hope not. Hope someone finds the answer to all of it, haha.
Something interesting though, I have noticed almost everyone has had hives worse after they were gone for awhile. I got hives last winter, they went away in the summer, then came back this winter, but they haven’t been as bad as last year.
Last year I was having like 8-9 really bad break outs a month. Now I am having probably 2 really bad ones a month. I still get them just as often, they just aren’t as bad.
Good news though, last night I did something that normally makes me break out all over (public speaking), but nothing, I felt great!

That is awesome that you were able to do your public speaking without a reaction. I applaud your courage for even attempting it. Personally I would be so nervous of having an attack that I wouldn’t have the courage to go through with it. But that is great that you did!
I too hope that Cholinergic Urticaria is all connected, but at the same time you are right that it could be a different cause for each of us. I don’t really think the meds had anything to do with my attack, since I took them almost 6 months or so before I first got Cholinergic Urticaria.
I typically get at least a small reaction daily, sometimes multiple times per day. The only exception is if I am at home and relax all day and avoid spicy foods. Just today I thought I would eat about 3 pepperoni slices my wife had (she was cooking herself a mini-pizza). The spicy pepperonies made me start to have a small reaction. It is so aggravating sometimes. But I only get the really bad reactions when I can’t cool down, and probably around 5-10 times per month.

I took a lot of antibiotics as a kid because I had strep throat several times a year. I didn’t have any around the time when I first noticed my Cholinergic Urticaria but I did suffer from near alcohol poisoning around the same time I started having attacks. I recall my allergist saying that Cholinergic Urticaria can start after someone has been quite sick so that kind of made me wonder if they were related.
If you want to know the story it was my 18th birthday party and I usually don’t drink. I ended up being bed ridden for about a week after the party with nausea, dizziness and headaches. What a miserable week.

Hmm… interesting… I’ve had this for 20 years. I’m 23 now and no one can cure me. Anyways, The only time I’ve been sick was 20 years ago and haven’t been sick since, weird huh? Not even the flu or nothing… only a migraine attack once or twice a year. which is just bizarre… and I always have cold hands/feet, even though my body temperature is high, I must be an alien cause no one can even tell me what’s wrong with me :-… They really think it’s in my head, but it’s not. IT’S NOT!!!! ;D
Back to the topic… So when I was 3 I had a led poisoning and was sent to the hospital and soon after that… well hell broke loose…
I’m kind of starting to think it might be triggered by a vaccine, like some say for autism? Cause it’s around that age you get all those vaccines no? Pfff… I hope I know a little more by the next blood exam results…
Godspeed 😛

Charles B Good,
I know what you are saying about it “being in our heads.” That gets annoying when people say that to me. I always say, “Let me punch you in the face, and if it hurts, then it is all in your head lol.”
That is odd how you have had this for 20 years, and have not been sick. I have not yet been sick enough to have to take antibiotics. I recently had a pretty bad cold, but I have not taken a single antibiotic since I originally got this 7 years ago. I did take antibiotics about 5-6 months before I first got it.
That is an interesting theory about the vaccine thing. I never really considered that before, but hey, anything is possible! I too can’t wait to see if your blood tests show anything.

Title: Antibiotics or strong deodorant?

I wonder if the Cholinergic Urticaria could be caused by strong medicine like antibiotics.
I took it the week before it appeared in first place. Then 5 or 6 days later I went out it was the first sunny day and I took a fast walk
and the Cholinergic Urticaria appeared.
Another thing could be a strong deodorant I used for a period of time because I used to sweat on the hands a lot..hmmm
But I used that stuff a long time so I don’t know if thats a reason.
Another reason could be stress because I really had a lot of stress that time, heartbroken, problem with my study
and I felt really really bad.
But I’m feeling very good now so shouldn’t it disappear if stress was the reason?

It’s always a possibility, however, we really don’t have any direct evidence that it does. I too have tried strong deodorant (my armpits used to always be damp), and I have had quite a few antibiotics growing up (seemed like I would get strep throat every winter when I was a teen).
But there isn’t necessarily any direct evidence or a connection. It would be awesome if we could the cause.
As far as stress goes, stress does seem to aggravate a lot of health issues, and may even cause some forms of hives. However, we can’t say for sure whether stress really causes Cholinergic Urticaria either. I agree with you though, it seems that if stress triggered it, it should subside within a reasonable time once we are not so stressed. But you never know.

Hi, this is my first post.
I also suffer from Cholinergic Urticaria.
Have been to a Dermatologist and unfortunately haven’t found an effective treatment that works yet.
Anyway, I have also been suspecting a strong deodorant to be a factor.
This is why:
I never used to sweat and it was only early this year in January when I begun getting sweaty (my armpits get damp).
Obviously, as a reaction to a sudden consistent sweat, I looked for an antiperspirant and didn’t find anything that worked except for a stronger one called Maxim!
I’ve been using Maxim and it stopped my sweating but it was around about the same time I started to get extremely itchy/stinging sensation on my hands and feet only.
There were no visible physical symptoms when this happens and I was extremely puzzled as to why I got so itchy! but it seems 6 months later it has progressed and I do in fact get red spots.. lots of them all over my hands, wrists, arms, neck/chest and possibly my back too but I don’t always look there. In fact, my hands are getting extremely itchy as I am typing this!
Anyway, I have tried stopping Maxim for a week and I still get the episodes so that is why I have continued to use it again (because it is rather embarrassing to have such big damp armpits visible on my shirt out in public).
Anyway, without a doubt I agree that it is also stress that has been a factor to my skin condition because I know for a fact I have been extra stressed this year due to many personal reasons.
So in the end it is difficult to work out exactly what is the cause, it could be a number of things.
The sudden sweating could be explained due to my stress. The hives could be due to Maxim or my stress alone, or a combination of both.
There are times where I thought that I am allergic to my own sweat!
Because when I get itchy on my hands, I look closely and it is moist (sweat) so I always wondered if it was the sweat which caused my itch, or if my sweat is just happening because I am itchy/stressed from the itch.
It is really hard to say for sure! The only thing I am sure of, is that this SUCKS.
One question I am interested to know is:
I tend to get itchy only on my hands or feet, and when I am extra stressed with a full-blown episode, then it happens all over my neck and body and arms and head.
But it ALWAYS starts in the hands and feet only!
So my question is do any of you experience the same? Get itchy in a specific spot first? Or random?
Thanks for reading, I really hope a cure is found and that we may all live happy lives because this really has lowered my quality of life. I really missed those days where I could go anywhere, do anything without this stupid itchy skin.
